Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

i seem to have a problem within empathy.

when talking to someone (text chat) and i was looking through the menu bar at the top to see what features/options there are and when the person replied while i had the menu open then screen just froze and the menu items disappeared and i could not click on anything or close anything. think it crashes x system

nothing seems to work.

i have to press ctrl alt f1 and restart to get back to my desktop.

i have also noticed that this happens when songs changes in rhythmbox also, so it looks like it freezes when the notification popup happens while in the menu options.

open empathy and open a chat window.
when you open the menu list at the top of the window and a notification comes through ie change song notification or new message notification the x server freezes.

i have just tested this again to see how it behaves now.

when the song changes and notification is displayed while scrolling through the menus it no longer crashes x server.

but it still happens when you are scrolling the menu and someone sends to a IM.

to reproduce this.

start talking to someone using empathy, and scroll through the menus at the same time you get an IM and x server just freezes you can do anything. so you have to restart x.

I also have this problem but it is very strange that an application freezes all xserver. Maybe it's a bug of compiz, xserver or gtk.

do you get the issue if you don't use compiz? if the whole screen hangs it's rather a video issue yes

bug confirmed. i would set the priority at a higher grade because it freezes X and could be dangerous in terms of data loss.
