xubuntu Gutsy: Screensaver shows user's screen at password prompt

Bug Description

This happens with xfwm built-in compositing, when it is disabled, everything is fine.

I use the Blank Screen screensaver on two Gutsy xubuntu machines. If I lock the screen, the screen goes blank. If I then move the mouse to show the Unlock dialog, the desktop is shown. Sometimes controls on the Unlock dialog are not drawn.

I expected the screen to remain blank while the Unlock dialog was displayed. The standard Gnome environment does behave in this way.

Other screensavers under xubuntu disappear and show the screen while unlocking.

Are you running the xfwm built-in compositing? I've found that, on a Xubuntu machine using xfwm and compositing, the desktop would be shown together with the "unlock dialog".

Expected behaviour: Lock screen -> move mouse -> black screen surrounding the "unlock dialog"

Seen behaviour: Lock screen -> move mouse -> the desktop surrounds the "unlock dialog"

Workaround 1: Disable compositing from the "Preferences" -> "Window manager settings" -> "Compositing" tab

Workaround 2: On the previous tab, make sure the second option (too long to remember) is unchecked.

Ahh, yes, you're right. Disabling compositing does give the correct behaviour (screen is black at unlock dialog).

The option was at WIndow Manager Tweaks. I'm not sure what the 'previous tab' is that you're referring to (I have Placement, and that's not relevant). I did find that unchecking 'Display full screen overlay windows directly' on the same tab made the problem go away.

I was refering to the last tab, the one with the compositing manager options, so that "Previous Tab" meant "The tab described in the point above". Actually, "Display full screen blablabla" was the option I wanted to name, but I just didn't remember. Please keep in mind I've only seen that option twice... and in spanish.

PS: Do you think we should change the status of the bug? At least put it as confirmed, as you have seen it in two machines and I have seen it in another one. Maybe even fixed does it.

I've changed the package for this to xfwm4; I assume a relevant developer will be notified. I'll leave it to them to determine whether it's confirmed - I think there's still a bug here (at least behaviourally) and so it's not fixed.

Thank you for your bug report. I'm marking this as confirmed based on Miguel Martinez and Ian Howson feedback. We still have to figure out if it's a xfwm4 bug or a xscreensaver one.
