Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfprint4

Hello, This is Xubuntu 7.10 with 2.6.22-14-generic kernel and xfprint4.1 (seems to be). Xfce 4 Desktop Environment
version 4.4.1 (Xfce 4.4) xfprint4:
  Installed: 4.4.1-1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 4.4.1-1ubuntu2
What happens:
1. User starts Mouspad and then clicks file - print
2. xfprint window pops up, but all the adjustment controls are not functional
3. User clicks on the Print button and the xfprint window freezes with no printing
4. ps -e reveals that xfprint4 is running - using kill pid, xfprint4 is stopped
5. Mousepad can be exited normally thru the GUI
6. Checking /var/log/messages and syslog - shows no relevant messages
7. Printer is Samsung ML2010 on USB port - CUPS does fine job with it.

My fix has been to install gedit which prints in a feature-ful and functional manner.
Maybe Mousepad ought to use CUPS ??

PS - Thanks for the great USB and printing support.

Best regards, Howard Haradon

Hi,

Yes, a2ps its installed.

Curiously, i get this crash again, after a fresh install of a daily build of the Xubuntu-Alternate CD. But after a few crashes is not happening to me again.

I will try to attach some crash info later,

Yes, it seems to be installed. Locate finds one
hundred or so instances. There is a /usr/share/a2ps
directory that is full of files.

Thanks, Howard

OK, I'm a liar ! Without thinking, I looked for a2ps on my PC, but
I forgot that it was then running RH9. DOH! So it really lacks a2ps.
The Ubuntu 7.04 guys forgot to stir it in.

Mea culpa, Howard

So installing a2ps fixes the problem?

xfprint4 and a2ps seems to do the work. I have three other packages on my system for printing which are: gnome-cups-manager cups-pdf cupsys-driver-gutenprint. I don't have a default Xubuntu system but I installed everything myself so this is all that I have installed to get Mousepad to print on my system. Make sure you choose the right settings under System > Printers > Your printer > Properties. I chose Local or detected printer and Detected printer : Gutenprint.

I had similar problems with xfprint - Xubuntu 7.10 gutsy. xfprint locked up before installing a2ps package. After a2ps installation, xfprint works fine. It's clearly noted in the Xfce documentation that xfprint uses a2ps. Whoever prepared the Xubuntu install just missed it. I used the Alternate Install CD, if that makes a difference.

Checking the changelog and the packaged versions. It appears Dapper, Feisty, and Gutsy are all affected. This bug is SRU worthy. Hardy and Intrepid are not affect (a2ps is Depended on by xfprint4). Nominating Dapper, Feisty, and Gutsy for SRU.
