Thank you for your bug report. I can confirm this. The new theme is used in a very few apps, for me it isn't used on the desktop, nor in xfce's menu, nor in the preferences of xfce. It's used in some gtk apps such as kazehakase.

Workaround for this problem:
(Works on Xubuntu 8.04.3 LTS, not sure about other versions.).

Put the theme in
/usr/share/icons/
>>/usr/share/icons/MyTheme

Modify the 'index.theme' in the '/use/share/icons/default' file to look like this:
----------------------------------
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=MyTheme

[Desktop Entry]
GenericName=MyTheme
----------------------------------

I don't know if the GenericName entry is necessary or not, but I am too lazy to check if it is.
Anyways, this works and I have a consistent themed mouse pointer throughout :)

Hope it helps someone!

Rvgsd workaround make input impossible and the terminal doesn't start. But the cursor is the right one.

Still default cursor on desktop on my machine. Was hoping the last lot of updates would fix it but they didn't.

Addendum

I downgraded my nvedia drivers because of another bug and ... many of the buttons in applications would not work but by resizing the window(thus putting the buttons in another area of the screen) they were clickable. And the cursor changed to default in parts of Firefox which prevented hiliting text. But when the screen was resized it was different parts of the text where untouchable.

Is the problem any connection with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/747717 ?

Installed Xubuntu 15.04 this past week on two machines and immediately started experiencing this very frustrating problem on both. This is what worked for me:

Set mouse cursor theme to something other than default in the regular settings - In my case DMZ (Black), and I'm assuming your's also since this what we're trying to make work.

Open Thunar as root. Go to File System > usr>share>icons>default. Right click on index.theme then open with Mousepad. Modify Inherits=DMZ-White to Inherits=DMZ-Black.

Save and exit then restart Xubuntu, you should be all set. Tested om my main desktop rig running AMD A8 and on my laptop running older i3. Black cursor theme surviving restarts on both machines and working on all programs I've tested on so far including Cyberfox for Linux with 3rd party theme.

Hi Jason,

Many thanks for this, can confirm that a 'sudo nano /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme' and editing the file to DMZ-Black resolves the issue.

Tested for approx 60 minutes now and everything works as expected :)

Kind regards

I've gotten themes to work but setting a custom cursor size does not work, the cursor is the correct size inside of most programs but reverts whenever I move over top panel, desktop or login screen. Tried to change cursor size using various methods, as suggested, but no luck. Why is this bug considered low priority? It's been 8 years, please fix it! Being able to see the mouse cursor can be difficult for anyone with less than 20/20 vision, it's also very helpful for people using larger HD displays. Cursor size needs to remain static, this is a basic accessibility feature.

David Morrell (dsmorrell) wrote :

Solved this problem as follows. Now have a non-default theme in place (redglass) with a larger cursor (48, not default 18).

Thanks to all above for ideas.

The solution below was tested on Ubuntu Studio 16.04 with XFCE 4.12.2 and all package updates installed.

-----------

XFCE window manager offers an option to set a non-default mouse theme. I use this to set a large red pointer. The pointer reverts to the system default theme in many applications.

Suggested solution from this forum:

As root, edit

 /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme

to change a directive from the default to desired new default theme;

 Inherits=redglass

Restart XFCE.

Redglass theme remains in place reliably but the cursor is at the default size of 18 rather than the larger 48 I need.

Open Configuration Editor & set

 /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/cursor_size = 48

Right click on this directive & choose ‘Set to default’ (requires root privilege).

Restart XFCE

If the altered cursor_size directive is not set as default the cursor is sometimes at sie 18 and sometimes at 48, depending on the application being viewed (Ok in OpenOffice, small in most other apps e.g. Thunar, MySQL Workbench, Ardour4, Sound Converter. Some programs respect the customised theme & others only its default version. Hence the importance of setting the altered cursor_size as a default. I do not know where this default value is stored.key
