Bug Description

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

After a fresh installation of intrepid I started xchat-gnome and it started fine, tried to adjust the transparency settings and it crashed. It now won't start and I get:

jono@forge:~$ xchat-gnome
The program 'xchat-gnome' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'.
  (Details: serial 526 error_code 17 request_code 145 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

not like, do you get the issue if you don't use the desktop effects option?

I can reproduce this without desktop effects (using metacity).

I had the same thing happen after changing transparency settings. Is there a config file somewhere to undo the transparency adjustments?

I'm getting the same thing. I have no idea if it's transparency related in my case, but it could well be. The entry does not appear to exist in ~/.xchat2/xchat.conf, and since the app can't start, I have no way of checking...

Mark Howard (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xchat-gnome/+bug/288468/comments/3) was able to track where the 'transparency background' setting sits. I just confirmed it works as a workaround.

Use gconf-editor, browse to apps/xchat/main-window, and change the 'background_type' key from 2 (transparency) to 1 or 0. xchat-gnome works fine after that.

I can confirm the bug, and that the workaround mentioned above worked.

I can't reproduce this one myself, but as Thomas Herve can confirm it, I'm marking this bug confirmed.

Confirmed. Set transparency, xchat-crashes, does not start after with this error.

could be bug #284635 which has been fixed in jaunty, could you try on jaunty?

No, I don't have a jaunty installation

I've been testing Jaunty. I can confirm this was fixed (updated my system less than 15 mins ago). Anyone else, or shall I close this?

hit this bug in Ubuntu 8.10 after upgrading to NVidia restricted drivers build 180. Fixed by gconf-editor as Klaus describes in comment #6

closing since that's fixed in jaunty, intrepid is not a lts version and that's bug easy to workaround in a IRC client so a stopper bug, there will not be an intrepid update for this one
