I have the same problem on shutdown with my tabletPC. The stacktrace leads to wacom_drv.so, which is part of wacom-tools.

I actually don't know why I am a subscriber of this bug, but I suspect, that I reported a bug which was marked as a duplicate of this one.
However, I don't have wacom-tools installed:

muelli@xbox:~$ apt-cache policy wacom-tools
wacom-tools:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:0.8.1.3-0ubuntu2

     1:0.7.9.8-0ubuntu3 0
        450 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

Also I don't understand why this bug has been closed as INCOMPLETE.

the source package which builds the driver is called 'wacom-tools'.

This crash is probably due to the new version in the archive. The old one (0.8.0) doesn't crash.

the driver itself belongs to xorg, but the source comes from wacom I think.

The driver is installed as a binary xorg input driver. This bug is already patched in the updated version of linux-wacom source 0.8.1-3. somebody simply needs to update the driver package.

ah, the binary package xserver-xorg-input-wacom already points to wacom-tools, sorry.

My this morning tests showed that unfortunately 0.8.1-4 crashes in a similar manner with a shorter freeze duration for me. However, i must test it again, but I believe had it working for while with 0.8.1-3. As said, I must test it again when I get back to my computer, but it is probable that the crash in 0.8.1-4 is regression and I will be taking it up with wacom dev people in their list.

I'll try to get at it over the weekend.

It seems I was wrong. 0.8.1-3 also causes X to crash on hotplug.

I have been investigating the issue with upstream and it seems it is extremely simple. There is a faulty build switch in the code that builds in code that should not be there for Xorg 1.4 and up. It worked correctly for a particular version in between now and the first report and thus my memory of it being ok. The next development release should come with the corrected switch and fix the crashes. Current source can easily be built to not crash too with some manual patching. You can find the details on linux-wacom mail list.

Hi, just to confirm :

On latest ubuntu intrepid, with a wacom volito2 tablet :
  - plugging in the tablet at any time (boot, gdm, GNOME session opened, desktop apps running or not) is OK and tablet works in absolute mode (cool !)
  - unplugging the tablet under X crashes X.

BTW I encounter https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wacom-tools/+bug/272536 too, and I added a more precise comment about the problem.
