This should be fixed first in lucid.

Proposing debiff:

virtualbox-ose (3.1.6-dfsg-2ubuntu2) lucid; urgency=low

  * Disable Launchpad integration for the stable release.
  * Add u03-fix-cpu-lockup.dpatch, cherry-picked from upstream to
    fix a bug causing the CPU to lockup on boot. (LP: #562187)

On further investigation it seems that fedora 13 in fact boots fine.
So I can only confirm the issue on debian.
And hence it might be a far more discrete bug than I assumed, if it only applies to the debian kernel.
...
Yea, reason for Karmic first was my own itch.
Great to see this fix (hopefully) in Lucid!
