[Jaunty] Update notifier doesn't show up

Bug Description

The update notifier never shows up in the panel. The process is running, killing and restarting doesn't help. When it should appear, there is a short, few pixel wide flashing but nothing happens.

This is what I get when I start update-notifier from a terminal:

thank you for your bug report, that's not one though but a design decision

Well, yes, but these notifications never show up either. I am running Jaunty and there are updates every day, but I never get any notifications.

I have upgraded to Jaunty and update-notifier doesn't show up in the notification bar when updates are available. I have to run apt-get dist-upgrade manually every day.
