Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager-core

Towards the end of upgrading from feisty to gutsy, I am told this:

System upgrade is complete.

Restart required
To fully ugprade, please restart

I am then asked:

Continue [yN]

It is unclear whether answering 'y' will automatically restart the system or not at this point (and in fact since I REALLY do not want to restart this system, I am going to have to leave the prompt hanging there for a few days until I can be right in front of the machine in case it does restart). The description should be explicit here about which answer, if any, will automatically restart the system.

hmm probably you're right in the sense that is not clearly stated which one would restart the system. But reading through it, to me Y is the option to restart the system and N no.

Maybe this is not a real bug??

I genuinely cannot tell. If I was for some reason forced to guess, I
suppose I'd agree with you, but I am not certain enough to select either
option. Therefore, for me, this message is genuinely confusing and
unhelpful and will prevent my completing the upgrade for some time.

I'd argue rather that it isn't a *critical* bug. But it is a UI bug,
unless I am uniquely bad at interpreting these kinds of statements.

In general, if what you're doing is presenting a choice between
restarting the system and not, this would be best put as "restart the
system now [yN]?" (with some preceeding explanation) as opposed to "some
talk about restarting the system" followed by "Continue [unspecified
action/process that might or might not be restarting the system] [yN]?"

On the other hand if you're *not* asking about restarting the system,
then it's unhelpful to have talk about restarting the system and then
ask "Continue [something else entirely] [yN]?" because it's hard to work
out what the something else might be.

Thanks for your bugreport.

I changed the text to read:

Restart required
To finish the upgrade, a restart is required.
If you select 'y' the system will be restarted.
Restart the system now [yN]
