Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I'm not sure how to describe what this exactly, but from the System menu, goto "About Ubuntu". The docs it brings up (why isn't any path of the docs shown?) the "About the Name" section it says:

Ubuntu (pronounced "oo-BOON-too") is seen [...]

in the "What is Linux?" section:

The Linux kernel, pronounced 'linnuks' is the heart [...]

and in the "What is GNU?" section:

The GNU Project, pronounced “guh-noo”, was launched [...]

it would be nice if these were more consistent. The linux pronunciation seems to be missing a comma and any hyphens to indicate where the syllables are. If I had to make a suggestion I'd probably go with:

Ubuntu, pronounced "oo-BOON-too", is seen [...]
The Linux kernel, pronounced "lin-nuks", is the heart [...]
The GNU Project, pronounced "guh-noo", was launched [...]

Fair enough, although "lin-nuks" implies two n sounds rather than "li-nuks", which is what I've patched it too. The pronunciation of Linux is a little disputed as, this pronunciation is the given one but I have an interview with Linus where, when asked, he pronounces it "lee-nucks" (as in "lee-nus").

For the sake of consistency, I also removed the capitalisation on "oo-BOON-too".

Unfortunately these changes introduced non-translatable strings for the release, bug 288574.

I saw this pronunciation guide change when reviewing the ubuntu-docs upload in the release team's queue. "li-nuks" is absolutely useless to an English speaker as a pronunciation guide - it's precisely the "i" that we need the pronunciation guide for, and the "guide" is now every bit as ambiguous as the root string.

Please either fix the pronunciation guide offered so that it's unambiguous ("linnuks" is fine by me; lih-nuks might be an appropriate alternative; I suppose I could suggest using IPA but I guess that wouldn't make it any clearer to the average user :), or drop it altogether.
