Bug Description

Binary package hint: tuxpaint

We tried to print an image created with tuxpaint program but it fails. Printing worked great in tuxpaint in Feisty but not in Gutsy. CUPS error log has the following lines:

I installed Gutsy using tribe-5 and executed dist-upgrade to make it up to date.

And our printer is Brother HL-5140 if that matters. I am able to print from other gnome applications including GIMP.

I can't test this properly as I don't have a printer attached ATM but it does print happily to a PDF.

This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined. According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

The bug can be cause by faulty PostScript coming from the application (tuxpaint) or it can be cause by Ghostscript or the driver. To know more about this, we need more information. Please open the printer setup ("System" -> "Administration" -> "Printing") and in the window of the printer setup please click "Server Settings" at the top of the list on the left. Then mark the last option on the right: "Save debugging information for troubleshooting" Click "Apply" and close the window. Then print from tuxpaint again and post the (now much more verbose) error_log.

I checked the option you asked in the settings. During testing I recognized that the problem is only in the account of my child (username "child" in the log). With my account ("timo") there seems to be no problems at all. User "child" is able to print from OpenOffice and a test page from printer settings.

I think this might be a permissions issue if it works for the adult account and not for the child.

Any progress on this? Timo, have you by chance tried this out in Hardy or Intrepid? Hardy has the same tuxpaint version as Gutsy but perhaps something in the printing might have changed. Intrepid has a newer tuxpaint version which might be interesting to test with as well.

The last time I tried it in Hardy it didn't work. Workaround is to print the PNG files outside but it's not convenient for small children, even if saves paper ;-).

This has been fixed at some point, tested in Lucid, printing works fine. I believe this bug can be closed, please re-open if there is more information or if there are specific cases found where it doesn't work (or open new bugs).
