You can uncheck some options in thunar-volman to prevent thunar from automounting volumes/auto-opening a new window.
But there's no option to only blink a thunar item on the panel.

In Xubuntu Hardy you can control what is done when a removable drive is inserted in Settings Manager > Removable Drives and Media.

This wishlist bug is valid. An option to make the task list/window blink would be nice.

It should be specified whether a new window should be created to the Task list. If there is no Thunar window, it can't have a blinking item in the Task list. Perhaps "Mount devices" panel plugin could react to inserted devices (or e.g. CD-R discs) by changing its icon as well?

Just to add (for those who only have their wallpaper on the screen and nothing more.): A silent notification would be nice. It's like when you're trying to eject a flash drive and a small popup in the lower left announce it to you. That would be a nice way to notify you that a device is plugged in. Though it has to be pretty small.
