Bug Description

Binary package hint: telepathy-butterfly

In Ubuntu Karmic Koala Alpha 2, If I let Empathy 2.27.3 connect to my MSN Messenger Account, then I am unable to log into my account from any other computers. Telepathy-Butterfly 0.3.4-1 just reconnects to the MSN network and kicks off the remote machine trying to log in.

Proposed solutions:

1) detect when another client connects to msn messenger network and display a notice asking if user would like to reconnect (like pidgin does)

2) allow multiple instances of the same msn account to be open on both clients at the same time. (This feature is already available with googletalk and msn live messenger) Hopefully it can be implemented in telepathy-butterfly

Now using Ubuntu 64-bit Karmic Koala Beta with Empathy 2.28.0.1 and telepathy-butterfly 0.5.1 & papyon 0.4.3 the problem has resurfaced. While connected with the MSN Protocol in Empathy, I am unable to log into my MSN account on any other computer.

So the first solution isn't woking anymore ? Empathy keeps trying to reconnect after you log in on another computer ??

(FYI, second solution has not been implemented yet)

bug still exists while using:

telepathy-haze 0.3.2-2~ppa9.10+1
telepathy-butterfly 0.5.4-1~ppa9.10+1
python-papyon 0.4.3-1ubuntu1
empathy 2.29.5.1-1~ppa9.10+2

I did some more testing today and I have discovered that on my Ubuntu laptop with Empathy running, if it is idle then I can successfully connect to MSN Live Messenger from my windows XP computer. I can stay connected as long as the ubuntu laptop is not disturbed. If I press any keys or move the mouse on the Ubuntu Laptop, then Empathy reestablishes the connection to my MSN account and abruptly knocks my other computer offline again.

I'm guessing that when the status automatically changes from away to available the connection is re-established even if i have not manually confirmed the dialogue button to re-establish the msn connection in Empathy.

Looks like a bug in empathy, telepathy-butterfly doesn't try to reconnect by itself but if the client tell him to he does.

could you try if that's still an issue in lucid?

yes, i'm running the latest lucid with the empathy PPA and it still prevents me from connecting from my windows machine. this has been going on for a long time. i know its SUPPOSED to just ask the user for input if you would like to reconnect to MSN Messenger, but it just does it automatically which prevents me from using another client.

Like I said in the upstream bug report this is fixed in telepathy-butterfly as it won't automatically reconnect when disconnected by logging in on another computer, however Empathy will automatically reconnect it when the status change and disconnect you from the other computer
