Bug Description

Firefox in gutsy (2.0.0.6+2-0ubuntu2) does not find the swfdec-mozilla plugin after installing the swfdec-mozilla package.

This seems to be due to firefox looking for plugins only in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins now rather than /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins .

The package should add the appropriate symlinks if upstream doesn't provide them - after all a mozilla plugins package that's not picked up by the default (mozilla-based) browser is a bit broken.

Problem confirmed.

Totem makes symlinks to /u/l/mozilla/plugins & /u/l/firefox/plugins and is found
swfdec-mozilla only does one in /u/l/mozilla/plugins and is not found

Looks like mozilla/firefox plugin is a mess ! There are at least those 4 directories ;
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins /usr/lib/firefox/plugins /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins OpenOffice, Totem,
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins OpenOffice, Totem, unixprint
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins OpenOffice, swfdec-mozilla
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins OpenOffice, swfdec-mozilla, Totem

Shouldn't there be a script to install such browser plugins, being cross distro (like xdg-dir-tools) ?
fd.o people, please, help us

Well, /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins seems bogus anyway. The plugin installs itself there and doesn't work; /usr/lib/firefox/plugins is OK.

The path should be fixed in Package!!!

As workaround open an terminal an type "sudo ln /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libswfdecmozilla.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/".

fragro : yes and no

The real problem is :

All those plugins should have only one directory in Ubuntu !!
Then, once this choice is made, all packages should be patched to point to the chosen directory.

Current situation is a mess

This should be fixed before the release of hardy heron. This is highly annoying that free alternatives seemingly don't work. I will use the "Nominate for release" option although I do not know if I am supposed/allowed to do that. Let's see what will happen...

Just a quick jump-in in the discussion to say I've tried to write a blueprint for the problem:

It's just a shot at the issue, please feel free to comment on it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve Ubuntu.

It appears that the current version of swfdec-mozilla works correctly in hardy with firefox 3:

$ update-alternatives --list xulrunner-addons-flashplugin
/usr/lib/swfdec-mozilla/libswfdecmozilla.so
$

and 'firefox about:plugins' shows the module installed as expected.

Marking this bug as 'fix released'.
