I'm having the same exact problem. Has a resolution been found? I've tried running:

sudo dpkg --configure sun-java6-bin

But it fails with:

Setting up sun-java6-bin (6-02-1ubuntu1) ...
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
dpkg: error processing sun-java6-bin (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:

I am, of course, running Gutsy. Any insight is appreciated, as I cannot get the firefox plugin to run, and it's driving me crazy :-)

I gave up any hope that any further action would be taken to debug this
issue and simply removed the package(s).

Hi !

Well, this was approx. 2 weeks ago ...

IIRC this all was connected to an attempt to install Eclipse which in
turn depends on Java6.

My maschine is an old AMD Athlon 1200MHz with 512MB of RAM. Probably my
selection was that huge that the installation run out of memory (just an
idea) ...

What I did that time was simply to allow the installation process to
sent out a bug report. I did not known that you will need more information.

Please let me know which information you will need. I will try to
replicate that fault with the beta release.

I seem to get the same error. I installed sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-bin the other day, and then decided to remove it, but I only got the error mentioned above. Today there was an update, which couldn't be installed, so I tried to remove it again, an then re-installed with the update.

When I run sudo dpkg --remove sun-java6-bin I get a dependency-error (-jre depends on ia32-sun-java6-bin | sun-java6-bin) so I tried sudo dpkg --remove sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre and got the following:

(Reading database ... 126157 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing sun-java6-bin ...
update-binfmts: /var/lib/binfmts/jexec corrupt: out of binfmt data reading

dpkg: error processing sun-java6-bin (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
No theme index file in '/usr/share/icons/sun-java6.png'.
If you really want to create an icon cache here, use --ignore-theme-index.
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of sun-java6-jre:
 sun-java6-bin depends on sun-java6-jre (= 6-03-0ubuntu1).
dpkg: error processing sun-java6-jre (--remove):
 dependency problems - not removing

Please tell me if there's anything more needed to complete the bugreport, or if you need/want some additional info!

I "solved" the problem by copying the file /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.03/jre/lib/jexec to /var/lib/binfmts/jexec and after that I ran sudo dpkg --purge remove sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre

Not to nice, it complained a lot and then it worked. Probably not recommended.

This failure also can be caused by misleading license agreement (DJL). In my case, while installing sun-java6-jre, I've been gracefully asked to accept the license agreement. I've pressed "next" without scrolling through the agreement (not really interested in, as I've a home use installation) - and received bunch of error messages, that drove me here.

To get things running, one needs to scroll down through license agreement and tick the box "I Agree".

Hope that helps some guys that get here by the same cause :)

The Lisence-agreement window is to scroll down, then you reach the point where you can agree or not. Now it is working on my system.
