Something to consider when looking at this issues is the fact that there are many resolution related issues in Sugar. Originally sugar was written for the XO (with it's fixed screen resolution) there are several places where the xo screen resolution is still hard coded.

Problem reproduced in Maverick VM. The patch attached by Neeraj on 2010-08-13 causes the Settings dialog to expand to the entire screen size, which is sub-optimal.

Ideas from irc:
13:08 alsroot$ neeraj: I think, #617582 might be fixed in more reliable way (otherwise it will be all time a play w/ offsets)
13:15 alsroot$ neeraj: maybe tweaking _MAX_COLUMNS constant according to current screen resolution

Neeraj, please leave this assigned to you until it is completed or assigned to someone else.

The number of columns can _not_ be hardcoded because we do not know that ahead of time as monitor resolutions vary and dpi varies.

Instead the number of columns must be calculated at run time based on IconWidth/ScreenWidth .
