Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store

There are only a few region as described in the Ubuntu One Music Store FAQ:
- UK
- USA
- Germany
- Rest of the EU (i.e. not UK and Germany)
- Rest of the World (i.e. none of the above listed countries)

But if I visit the 7digital store directly I have the choice to select between
Belgium, Canada, Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy,
Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, USA and UK
(look at the attached screenshot or on the footer of http://www.7digital.com/)

I am from Austria and it's not possible to download the free songs I find on the 7digital Austrian store:
(look at the attached screenshot)

I don't understand why you limit the full access to the store only to UK, USA and Germany when the full access is possible through the 7digital.com website/store for other countries too.
So for me the "ubuntuone music store" is useless and I will purchase the songs directly from at.7digital.com until this issue is fixed.

Bernd - I understand it can be a little confusing. 7digital has invested and received music label approval to built more country-specific stores for their retail websites (at 7digital.com). This does not mean that their partners (like us) automatically get approval for our retail stores.

So far, we have only invested and received music label approval for 5 region stores. After the 10.04 release, we review the usage of the EU and World stores and decide where to build more country-specific region stores.

I hope this answers your question. I'm going to mark this bug as invalid, but that has not indication of the quality or importance of this question ;) Please feel free to ping me in IRC if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

I'm just very disappointed about that. I was really excited about the possibility to purchase songs via Ubuntu and it's completely useless for Austrians at the moment. I can only get some obscure independent labels....Where would I have to lobby to get Austria included, so we have access to more songs?

Lorenz: We're looking into ways that the Ubuntu community can have it's voice heard on the issue of store expansion. Follow the Ubuntu One blog (http://one.ubuntu.com/blog) for details.

There's still lots of great music in the World from many artists on indie labels like Beggars Banquet, 4AD, Matador, Rough Trade, and XL Recordings. The difficulty is wading through the stuff you don't care about. We're looking at ways to highlight popular artists in each store as well as how we can decrease our overall maintenance costs/time for each store which would enable us to add more stores faster.

Matt, thank you for your response on this! I agree, there is a lot of music to discover and I did for example enjoy that Marley Remix that was highlighted. What you are saying about highlighting popular artists sounds great to me. Still, most of the times a customer will not want to scan through music but search for something specific - and at the moment, it is unlikely he will find it in the World store. I'll check the blog regularly thanks - and btw, great to have that music store!
