Bug Description

The dapper version of ratpoison installed a .desktop file to /usr/share/xsessions. Currently the package contains no .desktop file. As a result you can't select ratpoison as your wm from the sessions menu in gdm (for example).

The changelog for ratpoison on Sat, 20 May 2006 17:18:22 +0200 says:
- no longer ship a .desktop file as already registered in the Debian menu

I think a .desktop should be included so that you can choose ratpoison from the gdm session menu.

Confirming this. Debian's rationale for not including a .desktop file doesn't apply to Ubuntu - we don't use the Debian menu system by default.

A work around is to copy the gnome.desktop in /usr/share/xsessions to ratpoison.desktop
Change the relevant occurrences of GNOME in ratpoison.desktop to RATPOISON
Change the Exec line to Exec=/usr/bin/ratpoison

Fixed: In 1.4.0-beta4-8 gdm/kdm support was fixed, so this is no longer needed.

As Dan O'Huiginn noted, the Debian fix does not apply to Ubuntu, as Ubuntu's x-window-manager packages use /usr/share/xsessions.

This bug is five years old but continues to be true of the current (13.04) ubuntu release.

If this is being tracked elsewhere, can we update here?
If not, I've attached the (trivial) file required to add to the ratpoison package.
