Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I think this usb audio device ( Sony VirtualPhones) used to work in past versions of Ubuntu (not sure which).
Now it appears in some places and not others which I check and fails to provide audio.
Yes, the device is powered on and the headphones too; the volume is turned up ( I can hear noise at
peak levels).
I think all the details are provided by ubuntu-bug, but let me know if you need more info.

Erase all of /etc/asound.conf and ~/.asoundrc*, then logout and login. They're clashing with PulseAudio due to unfortunately poor naming of the usb audio device by the manufacturer.

Changed in pulseaudio (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

After erasing and logout/in the device still does not work nor appears in the Sound Preferences dialog. Is this due to a clash with the other devices, including a digital tv tuner, which does appear in the list?

That did not make the device appear in Sound Preferences. Is it in
conflict with the digital TV tuner?

Are you using the maverick-proposed repository? See also bug 652035.

added maverick-proposed, aptitude update, aptitude install
alsa-utils/maverick-proposed and logout/in, no change in behavior. Is
this the right package?

Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote :

No, you need to update all the alsa* and pulseaudio ones. The specific one in question is source alsa-lib.

OK, I am able to use the headphones with VLC, as VLC sees them as a
choice, but not Sound Preferences.

Any more advice on this? I can use the device via VLC using ALSA, but
can't use Pulseaudio
(eg, it does not appear on Sound Preferences and I can't watch Youtube vids).

updated 638790 with this info: since my upgrade to maverick my usb sound card is not detected completely. until this morning's reboot with latest updates ALSA could see the card, but not Pulseaudio. Now ALSA does not detect it either. dmesg shows this error:
snd-usb-audio: probe of 2-5.4:1.0 failed with error -5. Details of my configuration are in bug 662156
