Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When editing a document in openoffice writer and then choosing save/as in the menu, you can see the save menu pop up, but it will freeze for perhaps 20 seconds. This does not happen regularly. It might have todo something with the files displayed in that folder. there where a bunch of odt files present in the folder, one ppt and one odp also.
I could reproduce this on two computers, but it really happens randomly and i did not find a way to reproduce it reliably, but it happens often.

Same problem on Kubuntu Lucid with openoffice.org-kde 1:3.2.0-7ubuntu4.1 and KDE 4.4 & KDE 4.5 RC1 too.
It freezes at every operation on files in KDE4 file save dialog.

If I remove openoffice.org-kde package, all works normally without any freezes, so the bug is in openoffice.org-kde package.

Possibly needs a new bug report, but:

64bit Kubuntu 10.04, latest openoffice.org from standard repositories (openoffice.org & openoffice.org-base & sun-java6 -... installed).

After a few days (and probably a few standard updates) suddenly unable to launch openoffice in any form (writer, spread). Program would launch, flash up briefly, then quit out. Launching via terminal showed no additional output during this process.

After testing various combinations of java (openjdk vs. sun-java6) and various openoffice.org packages as in recent bug reports, still same result.

Finally removed openoffice.org-kde and now works fine (although of course looks like a gtk app in amongst the KDE4 goodness).

These are standard repos (in fact a standard openoffice.org install/update as provided by default from kubuntu 10.04) and the result is a non-functional openoffice, that's a little worrying for those users whose main utility is an office suite...

To reproduce:

Open a document, edit it, save it -> kde's dialog in OO is fast and fluent

Open a document, edit it, copy part of the document to clipboad (strg+c), save it -> kde's dialog is hell slow and laggy

Confirm reproducing this bug via method from MMS-Prodeia on Lucid and Maverick!
Unloading Klipper didn't help.
If I remove openoffice.org-kde, file dialogs works normally.

If I put something other in clipboard (from other app, not from openoffice), current freeze of file dialog is stay here, but if I wait, next freezes no longer occur.

Dito, confirmed as described by MMS-Prodeia and Murz (stopping Klipper has no effect)

My temporary workaround is to install the Gnome integration instead--it just looks and works so much better, especially if you use a unified system theme such as QtCurve. To do this, remove openoffice.org-kde and install openoffice.org-gnome instead. OpenOffice will now no longer have file dialog hangs or sluggish scrolling in Calc, but you will only have the default OOo file picker by default. To get the Gnome file picker after installing the Gnome integration, edit /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice and insert the following near the top, after the comments:
export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome

I'm not sure, but that last step may need to be repeated after a future OpenOffice.org upgrade.

I can confirm this on Kubuntu 10.10 (maverick). Trying Christians workaround I found a solution, that worked for me:
uninstalling (+removing config) of kde, gnome and gkt integration by
 sudo apt-get remove --purge openoffice.org-gnome openoffice.org-gtk openoffice.org-kde
and reinstalling openoffice.org-kde by
 sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-kde

Now the dialogs are fine, hope it stays like this...
