Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

I have downloaded KUbuntu 8.04 and I am trying to use Impress to read a PowerPoint presentation containing sound.
The presentation is read OK but there is no sound.
I point out that my sound card is working and I have tested it. (Just in case) so this appears to be some kind of routing problem with sound produced by OpenOffice to the KDE sound server, but I don't know where to look for parameters.

I have also downloaded the Knoppix 5.3 DVD and found out that the functionnality works out of the box there but I have not managed to find out why.

Maybe the parameters from the KDE/OpenOffice/Arts/whatever need some tuning.

I send you the file I try to play.

I just tried to play this file in Mandriva 2008 (KDE 3.5.7) with openoffice.org.2.2.1-4.1mdv2008.0. No sound.
Same result with all the pps I have tried.
KDE and Kaffeine sounds (Xine) are OK.
Mplayer is installed but the mplayer window in OOo Impress is gray and not responding.
Java-1.6.0-sun is installed with Alsa support and its path is recognized by OOo Impress. JRE works fine with OOo Base.

Thank you for your help.

Do you still have this problem with openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 in Ubuntu 8.04?

Don't know but likely.
I have not installed 8.04 yet I have tested files with a live-CD and that
did not work, this was in May I don't know if the live-CD has been changed.
On the other hand I have come to believe that this is not so much an
OpenOffice problem than a question of integration of OO to the distro.
Don't know if the package changes anything to that ...

MichelK,

This only appears under Kubuntu, correct? If so I think it is probably missing some bits of gstreamer needed to make the audio play.

Thanks,

Will look further into gstreamer.
What I found interesting was that it works out of the box with Knoppix
Live-CD so I will look what gstreamer packages are round there, of course
this does not tell me how the packages are built, but since Knoppix is also
Debian based I had hoped it would be close enough.

As far as I know yes ... but I have not installed OpenOffice 3.0 yet. Has
there been an update of integration with 8.04 in the last 2 days ??

Was thinking about you. I will send you one pps that gives me problems so
you have an example (I guess you already have some but just in case this
would be Yet Another Thing M$ F.. Up in PPS Format).

BTW I tried a Mandriva Live CD and the sound was actually played at the
start of presentation ... until I asked for the next picture :-/.

So far only Knoppix has passed that test.

What kind of sound files are in the document? If they are mp3's then you must install the proper gstreamer plugins for them, openoffice.org can't depend on the extra plugins since they are in the universe repository.

Also make sure all of the suggests are installed for the openoffice.org-impress package, that might help.

Do you have all of the suggests installed for impress they are:

gstreamer0.10-plugins-base, gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

If not then install them and see if it works.

THAT WAS IT
Installed
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
and it all worked.
Sorry but on the face of it, why should I have installed something name "bad"
or "ugly" in my system if all the rest worked ...
I will look into the description of those packages.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

The codecs in ugly aren't legally distributable in all locations and bad haven't been well tested. But if you need them to play your files... well then you need them.

I have problem with sound on .pps and .ppt presentation files.
The sound stutters at about 1 second intervals.
The same files work perfectly with Mandriva 2008.1 (kernel 2.6.24) and OOo 2.4.1 but exhibit this problem with Mandriva 2009.0 (kernel 2.6.27) OOo 3.0.0

I am unable to determine where the problem lies.
