As there are so many occurrences (duplicates), i think this bug is confirmed.

npviewer.bin related...
After updating to the adobe's non-free flash plugin... Several time I
had the following situation. I could not close a tab (it just freeze
my FF) until I kill the npviewer.bin process....

It directly affects the productivity of ff!!! Negatively!

I can confirm this bug. I am running 7.10 on AMD64 platform. Most of the crashes seemed to occur after upgrading to the latest flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.115.0

Firefox will usually not crash; however, npviewer.bin process will crash and consume 100% cpu on about 50% of flash websites.

This bug makes flash all but unusable on 64-bit Ubuntu platform.

This one is hard to reproduce I find. Does anyone have a website which reliably reproduces this?

If libflashplayer.so or npviewer.bin has a bug we will be reliant on the friendly people who produce this software (woo!! Go freedom!). Unless of course there is a workaround.

I haven't had a recurrence of this bug in months (since I originally posted
it, I think). I haven't seen something reliably crash the flashplayer. Sorry
guys :)

Still happens to me all the time, on just about any website with flash. Even the flash ads on http://www.slashdot.org sometimes cause npviewer.bin to crash.

I've attached a screenshot of the npviewer.bin process windows hanging around on my desktop after a firefox crash. Also, the relevant line from 'top' is:

So the original report is due to a null pointer problem. %edx is zero so (%edx) is sure to cause problems.

Perhaps valgrind is in order, but being a hard to repeat bug..... might be a little annoying.

Anyone want to try:

Ramdom crashes of npviewer.bin also occur on Hardy. This time I was at http://www.itwire.com/content/view/16309/1148/. Has also occured with flash content at www.mtv3.fi.

Firefox was loaded but not active.

Is this a duplicate of Bug #179882?

It appears there is a potentially fix package for 8.04, but not for 7.10 at the moment.

It coould be a duplicate... the screen turns grayscale while watching
video content via Firefox, then returns to colour after avariable
interlude. I can live with this problem for now, so I'll wait for 8.04.

btw, macromedia swf plugin just works fine with flash on 64bit systems.

I have Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron - released in April 2008.

npviewer crashes regularly for me right now. It works but is not stable. It appears that if a single page has many flash elements then it will crash. Some of those joke sites with lots of adds will crash it.

I have Ubuntu with proprietary Nvidia drivers I went 8.04 because I have a new nvidia card.

I'm in the same situation that waratah.

I got this crash directly after upgrading to Hardy alpha from Gutsy. x64 processor.

Does the link in the bug report fix this for anyone here?

I've marked my report, Bug 193811, as a duplicate. And I reiterate what I said in Bug 179882, also marked as a duplicate of this, that the replacement package, http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12234800/nspluginwrapper_0.9.91.5-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb, fixes it for me.

1) I have the same crashes of npviewer.bin.
2) When I try to install the nspluginwrapper_0.9.91.5-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb, that install itself goes wrong. See below.

I checked Synaptic, and it shows 2.6.1-1ubuntu10 is the most current version of libc6.

yes i am using hardy, and yes the version installed with synaptic is
2.7-9ubuntu2. I'm going to take a guess and say that a way you could install
it in gutsy is to either go compile from source or add "
http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ hardy main" as a repository and just find
it from there ( though it may request you install other things as
dependencies.

that seems to have cured the problem for me.

It involves installing this version of the nsplugin wrapper file:

I've been encountering this since Gutsy. I just installed Hardy. I can sometimes get this through clicking on an HTML email from Evolution (Ad) and it opens FF.

This bug is a bit more severe on laptops. Because it puts continual background strain on processors it leads to very high running temps but otherwise a responsive system. users who are unaware of the problem risk hardware failure or at least decrease lifetime.

For example on my core2 7400 it will cause a proc that runs normally around the 50C mark to sit at 60-70C and sometimes rise to 80C this will cause battery, harddrive and other component to have signf shorter lifetimes.

The same problem affects the GNOME version of Mandriva 2008.1 RC.2

I don't know if this is the same bug but flash seems to eat a lot of cpu on my computer too, whithout affecting too much the responsiveness of the system, even if the browser window is minimized. I use Hardy on a core 2 duo laptop.

Indeed going to http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/ (link submitted in Bug 113184) make my npviewer.bin crash.

With the latest version of firefox 3 (Hardy repositories) on AMD64 my viewer no longer crashes.
Going to the site mentioned above left npviewer running fine and I could watch the video on there.

Forget what I just said.
It crashed when I closed that tab, thought doesn't do it every time.
I just had all the videos playing on that site and closed the tab and re opened it and closed it again without it crashing.

With the latest version of Firefox (3 beta 5) on Intel(R) EM64T (Core 2 Quad)
everything is all right. No further crashes related to Firefox or npviewer.

Still the same problem here, crashed when viewing Google Analytics. Ruuning FF-3.0b5 on Hardy AMD64 radeon x1300 (fglrx).

Yeah, let me give you some details about my system upgrade

I have Xubuntu 7.10 Gutsy amd64 dualcore. I upgraded to all the stable Gutsy
updates. I upgraded Xfce to 4.4.2 via the Xubuntu Team PPA's. Then I decided
to help out the Phatch project, and Upgraded to Ubuntu (not Xubuntu) amd64
dualcore via the Ubuntu 8.04 alternate CD...

It just... offered to do a distribution upgrade, so I let it. I'm having
wierd issues. Immediately after upgrading I got this SIGSEGV npviewer.bin
crash.

Did I go about upgrading incorrectly? I am still a n00b.

It seems fixed for me since the last bunch of upgrades on Hardy. I get no more crashes when I close a tab with flash content or when I go to http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/ .

Are you still experiencing this issue?

Hardy updated as of now, and still getting npviewer crashes on amd64. Random crashes when loading youtube pages. a royal pain.

Anyone still seeing this crash please report the crash using apport and keep each crash report on a seperate bug report. It seems we have more than one issue on the report and noone obtained a crash report from apport or in /var/crash. We can only handle one crash per bug report.

I was open a page which had to use flash, Firefox froze and when it did a top:

killall npviewer.bin and Firefox was working, flash video not playing.

I've found that as long as flash videos aren't playing when I close their tabs nspluginwrapper doesnt crash.
I think its a bug where the stream is still open when firefox wants to close it but its not exiting properly, pausing or stopping flash videos seems to stop this from happening.

This bug is still present on Hardy Heron release with nspluginwrapper 0.9.91.5-2ubuntu2. Importance should be set to high; just look at the giant number of duplicates and subscribers!

I will add that on AMD-64 Nvidia setup that this bug does exist however it is not happening that often.

While I have FlashBlock (the Firefox addon) enabled, YouTube videos crash, when I open other websites using flash (which are blocked by the addon on the new sites) in new tabs.

I used FlashBlock for a longer time. Since I disabled it a few days ago there were no more crashes (especially "grey screens") of flash or nspluginwrapper. Maybe a lot of crashes on your machine are caused by FlashBlock, too.

Additional Information:
I am using Hardy (8.04) 64 bit (Core 2 Duo) with Firefox 3 Beta 5.

I am not using FlashBlock at all.

The problem just exists, and it is definitely connected to bad coding in either nviewer wrapper or in flash itself!

I'm also on Hardy 8.04 64-bit (core 2 duo) with firefox 3 beta 5. The crashes with npviewer.bin for me have stopped shortly before Hardy final was released, However, after having many tabs open (with a fair amount with flash embedded pages having been surfed), I do get the embedded "gray box" issue on new pages that I try to load up. Completely closing and restarting the browser fixes it temporarily until many embedded pages have been opened again...
FWIW, I also tried Flash Player 10 beta (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html) and overwrote the libflashplayer.so with the beta version to see if that helped at all, but it still has the same issue, which leads me to suspect it's an issue with npviewer.bin

about this npviewer bug:

I run hardy x86_64, and I see the same bug when using the wrapper around
acroread. So I have a 64 bit browser and use acroread in it. It is
usable, but after I close a tab with acroread in it, npviewer apparantly
is not closed and starts using 100% cpu in the background.
Well: 100% cpu on one core in my case.

I have to manually kill those npviewer.bin processes all the time.

It definitely is a bug and not fixed yet.

I can confirm the grey-screens in combination with the Adobe Flash
Plugin. I do not use flashblock, but adblock plus.

Did anyone find a way to reproduce the problem with a site or
combination of sites yet?

I have that problem on 8.04 since i got my new notebook (with amd64 cpu).
i don't see a correlation with any other plugin installed since that problem appeared before installing any plugin too.

Still exists on Intrepid. Has a moderate impact on a large portion of Ubuntu users - setting to high importance.

Had same problem: when trying to use Adobe Connect Pro flash application with firefox (2 or 3), flash got stuck, and after closing browser window, npviewer.bin started to go wild, using all CPU time (had to kill it).

No, I actually knew exactly what i was saying. i can't confirm it on Hardy because i'm not using Hardy. I'm using Intrepid alpha 4.

This bug has seen two different releases now and might see a third. There are reports from the two previous releases and nominations to have them fixed for Intrepid. Why would I start begin a new report after noticing this?

I've got a similar issue EVEN without nspluginwrapper installed, using swfdec and epiphany.
Only disabling flash altogether removes the problem.

I'm on Intrepid 64... 2.6.27-2. The strange part is... I didn't have this problem on Hardy. Something changed when I ran the dist-upgrade. I am not visiting any sites that I didn't before. The only thing that I can think of is that there definitely was a new version of the flash player installed. I'll try to remember and remove the nonfree flash and test it with the free version and or pin down a specific website. I suspect that it's google calendar but I'm not sure, I'll have to play with my sessions (I have a large number of saved tabs currently and I need to organize them before closing them).

At least, since a couple of days, The strange pop-up windows have
disappeared, Still without flash, but now surfing on the net is relatively
normal(regardless of the lack of flash animations).

I can confirm that changing from the nonfree flash to the combination of libswfdec-0.7.4-1 and swfdec-mozilla-0.7.4-2-ubuntu1 did fix the problem for me as well as speeding up firefox when dealing with flash websites. I purged flashplugin-nonfree. Can anyone else confirm that this fixes the problem?

Well, that's not really a fix. You're replacing the problem software with a completely different piece of software, that doesn't even use nspluginwrapper. As well, the free flash plugin isn't compatible with all sites, so it's not a good replacement option.

So I'd say this is a possible workaround, but not really a fix for the bug.

I first had Hardy installed with the flash 10 package from Intrepid. Yesterday I decided to try the Alpha 5 release.

With Hardy I had no problems with flash. Now in Intrepid firefox keeps crashing randomly while spitting out errors like this:

I use x86_64 by the way. Sometimes firefox doesn't crash but the flash movies stop playing and the flash widget dissapears. This output is then generated:

These errors are easies to generate and are more consequent.

changing from the nonfree flash to the combination of libswfdec-0.7.4-1 and swfdec-mozilla-0.7.4-2-ubuntu1 allows playing new flash contents like youtube?

tried it now, the version number was just confusing (i.e. 0.7.1 = 0.7.4-1). it works ok her, except that positioning in the middle of a video seems not really clean, example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXEHcibQ5jA&feature=dir. it either tries to download all before starting playing or does not take the new location within the video.

but, no crashes up to now ...

SoloTurn: where can I get the .4 packages? I'l try them then, but I can only find up to 0.7-1 in the repositories.

Bug #272286 might have found the real problem...it says nspluginwrapper 1.1.0 does not support wmode correctly with Flash 10 RC2

In my box, the flash widgets aren't working at all, just grey zones. But I've found that when I update the flash plugin with nspluginwrapper while firefox is closed:

nspluginwrapper -u /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flash-alternative.so

after doing that, I got firefox+flash working, it seems there is something with nspluginwrapper update in my case. BTW I have nspluginwrapper 1.1.0, Intrepid AMD64, up-to-date.

If get a crash with nspluginwrapper and flash, you can try disabling windowless mode in the plugin itself by creating /etc/adobe/mms.cfg and putting following in it:

WindowlessDisable=true

Does it work, for example, if the plugin crashes randomly loading

I just got the segfault again after updating Firefox and re-starting. Displaying a fairly standard web-page - probably msn home page.

I have this bug in ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6

Confirmed. Just installed 64bit ubuntu, installed flash, went to watch a youtube, got the error but videos are playing just fine.

Confirmed 8.10 64bit alpha6. Watched Youtube and other flash site (weer.nl) while toggling Noscript settings.

confirmed for ubuntu 8.10 Beta. Crashed on flash-site (heute.de) while switching NoScript.

confirmed for ubuntu 8.10 beta amd64. where opening a site containing flash stuff(golem.de)

I was completely fed up with this issue as well, but I found out that nspluginwrapper is at a newer version 1.1.4 which I found here http://freshmeat.net/projects/nspluginwrapper/?branch_id=75051&release_id=288070. I installed it from source on my system and the problems went away, so far at least. Here I built a .deb for you all to use. I didn't know how to put in a description. I'm sure there is a way to add it, but I spent hours researching and finding all the dependencies I need to compile/make nspluginwrapper and I was just too tired to figure that out. Just uninstall the version currently installed and flashplugin-nonfree. Then install the nspluginwrapper I provided and then reinstall flashplugin-nonfree. Restart Firefox and it should be fixed now.

I've build nspluginwrapper 1.1.4 in my ppa https://edge.launchpad.net/~philipp-dreimann/+archive .

You've to reinstall flashplugin-nonfree with "sudo aptitude reinstall flashplugin-nonfree" to get it working. (FF crashes without this step for me)

While this is not the solution ... it should lower Importance of this bug - Adobe has released flash for linux for 64bit systems

Confirmed for me. It's working so far nicely. The coolest things about
this beta plugin are:

* You can open two or even more youtube videos at same time and don't
notice those annoying gray boxes;
* Less comsumption of cpu resources (mem and cycles).

Adobe says it's an alpha release - however it works stable as far as I can tell.

    If you are referring to the Adobe Flash 64bit, it is still only in alpha
version.
    Only way to use it right now is to unistall whatever Flash you have
installed now and put
    the new 64bit Flash in your Firefox plug-ins. (from what I have read it
is not working for all browsers
    yet.

It works great with FF 3.0.4, seems to be extremely stable and much father
along than an alpha release. I have been running in since yesterday and its
been much better than the regular version.

New alpha plugin seems to work like a charm on my Intrepid with Firefox 3.
