Bug Description

Binary package hint: netbeans

If Netbeans is launched from a Unity shortcut, it launches ok. Right-click and select "Keep in Launcher". Application name is shown as "java-lang-Thread". Close Netbeans and try to re-launch from the launcher. The icon pulses for a few seconds but Netbeans does not launch.

In some cases the title bar of Netbeans is missing but I cannot find a pattern to this. May be associated with whether Netbeans was closed when maximised or full-screen but it's not consistent. On launch, the title bar is sometimes missing, the menu font is compressed vertically and menus appear to be in the wrong place. Clicking on one menu actually brings up another. Switching back and forth between full-screen (in the application) and maximised sorts it out.

Ubuntu is coming with a new user interface named Unity, which includes a new application launcher. It is already the default in 10.10 for the NetBook edition, it will be the Ubuntu Default from 11.04.

It would be nice if the IDE installer detected if Unity is installed and automatically added an icon to the launcher toolbar. It is pretty easy to do (a file must be created and another XML file must be changed), I described a manual configuration on my blog:

I note the inability to relaunch from the launcher is also a problem with Gimp.

A workaround to get Netbeans to launch from the Unity launcher is to drag from /usr/share/applications onto the launcher. A second icon appears while Netbeans is running but at least it can be launched.

I have this bug too. It's not very obvious to create launchers by dragging them from /usr/share/applications maybe some "right mouse button option" needs to be created for adding links and modifying unity?
2Richard Senior: thank you for youre reply it solved problem for me.

But it's not technically "solved." This is just a workaround.
There shouldn't be another icon while NetBeans is running.

I also get the second icon, which is really disturbing and most of all, takes away lots of space due to the way, unity works with its big icons. There also is a huge bug with non-maximized netbeans windows (which I dragged away accidentally) and cannot find a way to maximize it again but it does not have window borders and no min-max-close buttons at the top-bar.

It would also be nice if we move the menu bar to the top of the screen, as is the unity convention. Can this be added?

The reason Gimp has been added to the report is that it exhibits similar behaviour. I've just tried this on Precise Beta and it's still a problem but I'm going to remove Gimp fom this report and raise a new bug (unless one already exists).

no longer affects: gimp

Nowadays the "Lock to launcher" works and comments 1 and 2 are irrelevant and should be added as a standalone enhancement, the priority was decreased to P3.

We will think about the possibility, that the icon was added to Unity launcher during the installation.
