The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. Binary package hint: nautilus
When I insert an SD card into my build in card reader (Acer5672 Aspire Laptop), I get a icon on the desktop for it, which is the correct SD icon. When I look in nautilus, no icon is displayed but the text is there and I can access the disk.
