Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make ubuntu better.

The dpkg log shows that it wanted to stop mysql, but wasn't sure how. So
it asked you to stop mysql yourself, then retry the upgrade.

Could you please post here the result of

    'ps -ef | grep mysql'

? Then do a 'stop mysql' and re-try the upgrade.

Changed in mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Incomplete

Thanks Serge,

I rebooted the computer fixing the package with the --configure -a as the
package manager requested.
I have managed to apply all the upgrades that the upgrade manager required
except the mysql 5.1 upgrade. And rebooted again.

I attempted to do the mysql upgrade separately. After 24 hours it still
sits at the same spot as described in the bug report.

I rebooted again, ran synaptic package manager, fixed it as usual, ran it
again then attempted to uninstall mysql, thinking that might be simpler. -
it will not let me uninstall. Yen when i attempt the upgrade it tells me it
would be better if i uninstalled it and reinstalled, which i cannot do.

I do want to keep my settings because i use mysql for some great apps like
SugarCRM, but i have so far been going in circles with the
upgrade/uninstall/reinstall.

Best regards,

Duncan

Looking at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-dfsg-5.1/+bug/574557 ,
could you try

    start mysql

to see if that'll kick your upgrade process?

Also, I still would like to see the output of
    ps -ef
(before and after you do 'start mysql')

And if you just run it by hand, i.e.:

    /usr/sbin/mysqld

does a subsequent

   ps -ef | grep mysqld

show it running?

I'm encountering a similar enough problem that I think it is the same. Fresh Ubuntu 10.04 server, installing mysql-server-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu12_amd64.deb (and dependencies) from official repos, the install seemed to work but mysql doesn't start. 'start mysql' just shows "start: Job failed to start"

On the other hand, `sudo -umysql /usr/sbin/mysqld` starts it with no errors. How can I better troubleshoot the service's issues?

Hi Serge,

Since i could not uninstall, i could not reinstall, and i could not upgrade,
I decided to be bold and break the installation much more severely in the
hope that it would trigger a more effective repair/reinstall.

I renamed /usr/bin/mysql; /usr/bin/mysqladmin; /usr/lib/mysql;
/usr/sbin/mysqld; /usr/sbin/mysqld-akonadi; /usr/sbin/mysqlmanager

Restarted the computer.

Immediately it ran the package manager and reinstalled the mysql package.

Problem solved, and no additional configuration was required to return the
SugarCRM or other mssql dependent packages to full operation.

Best regards,

Duncan
