Bug Description

Testing Ubuntu 10.10 final release on Dell Inspiron M301Z

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Laptop/Reports/DellInspironM301Z

Nothing happens inseriting SDHC and xD cards on card reader (Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5288 (rev 01)). It seems there are some driver issue[1] with this controller or maybe it's simply currently unsupported by linux kernel.
Note this card reader controller could be available on other laptops, so this bug could be a duplicate.

Hi Luca,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Mainline kernel installed (2.6.36-020636rc8-generic #201010150908), tested, and executed apport-collect.

Unfortunately the card reader is still unrecognized.

I have the same problem on an HP mini 110-3000. The MeeGo bug report suggests that there is a vendor-supplied driver available as source, but I haven't been able to find it.

Hi,

Luca pointed me at the tarball, you can get it from: www.realtek.com > Download > Computer Peripheral ICS > Card Reader Solution > Card Reader Controllers > Software > section "Unix (Linux)"

I could now add support for this controller to the mainline kernel, but I don't have hardware to test it on.

Just wanted to report that after upgrading from Maverick 10.10 to Natty 11.04 Beta 2 the card reader works out of the box for me on a M301z. The latest official kernel on 10.10. still did not do the trick.

I've just tested on Natty, and it works most of the time, which means that sometimes the SD card is not seen, and sometimes it is. It might be a hardware problem though...

Another strange thing is that, when it is seen, it is detected but not automatically mounted. I have to click on it in Nautilus to have it mounted.

I have just stumbled on this bug here, could this one here in any way related to bug#787855 ? Different machine(s) brand but symptoms are almost the same

It looks like support for this device was added to natty via a staging driver, see bug #698006. I'm going to mark this one as a duplicate of that one. The automount problems should be fixed as well, see bug #759963.

@Peter, it doesn't look like your machine uses the same card reader so yours really is a different problem.
