Just to clarify: The mainline kernel works fine. I can test the latest mainline but it won't be for a day or so.
None of the Ubuntu kernels work since rc2. All patches which I've applied have been to the Ubuntu kernel source (by downloading the linux-source package). I hope this is the right way of doing this.
I've tried the patch I mentioned and also those suggested on upstream bug 22980 at comment #7 (although I'm not sure how to apply the third patch as it doesn't seem to be a patch to the kernel source code).
All kernels boot correctly if I pass the nomodeset parameter.
