Try installing a current alsa snapshot and maybe a newer kernel.
/dev/snd/hwdepC0D0 not being found means alsa does not detect your card correctly.
after upgrading alsa, try
sudo -s
wget ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/misc/hda-verb/hda-verb-0.3.tar.gz
tar xf hda-verb-0.3.tar.gz

Hi,
ok, i got sound !!!
no need to a newer kernel or a newer alsa.
Juste use module-assistant to rebuild alsa. In the alsa-sources the hwdep is enable (you can grep in /usr/src/modules/alsa-drivers) and so after a reboot hda_analyzer can be used to enable EAPD (see attached screenshot).
I don't know if I need to reenable sound after each reboot (I can't reboot right now) but it's a good progress.
I hope this help

For the time until the patch is out, here's a way to enable EAPD automatically:

get ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/misc/hda-verb/hda-verb-0.3.tar.bz2
unpack, sudo make, copy or link hda-verb to /usr/bin/hda-verb
and insert the following line into e.g. rc.local:
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1c SET_EAPD_BTLENABLE 0x2

If there's a simpler way without the hda-verb tool, would be great to know.

I tried it, BUT:

After a couple of times of rebooting, there come only a low noise cracking out of the loudspeakers. :-(
Even a reboot, nor to shut the notebook down and remove the batterypack helps to get the sound back.

The only thing I've created is a little shell-script, to enable the sound after a standby or hibernation.
In this script, I use the same string like above (like in rc.local):
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1c SET_EAPD_BTLENABLE 0x2
The shell script runs NOT automatically ... I have to start this manually.

This is the second installation with this "feature".
After the first I thought, I have done something stupid and therefore the sound is gone.

But now I think that's sadly a "feature" of the given solution of this soundproblem.

Had someone else noticed this Phenomenon?

I would be happy, if there is someone with a solution more stable ... because it's not my notebook!

Thx a lot.

I've found a better solution for this problem.
Have a look at this site: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Baustelle/Asus_X5DIJ
(The article above will propably updated 01.08.2009)
This site is in german only!

Have a look under "Problemlösungen" (Problemsolutions).
And then under "Sound".

A copy of the contents of this specific point (made 30.07.2009):
--- cut ---
sudo -s
wget ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/alsa-driver-unstable-snapshot.tar.gz
tar xf alsa-driver-unstable-snapshot.tar.gz
cd alsa-driver-unstable
./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
make
make install
reboot
--- cut ---

!! This fix the problem with the sound ... AND the sound is still there after hibernation or standby !!

You don't need hda-verb anymore!

Hope that helps much more people.

At first I thought I had the same problem, but now I am wondering if I do. I have no sound, same 82801I controller. I noticed in Sound Preferences, in the Hardware tab, I don't have any devices listed and pulse audio is constantly crashing (Bug #421505).

I updated from Jaunty tonight (around 11pm GMT) and sound disappeared.

Also in Sound Preferences I noticed that the out put device is "Null Output" (screenshot attached)

the last 15 days there been improvements but remains some problem.
1) When you start a video or music signal comes from the speakers and not from headphones even if you entered. Is need to disconnect and reconnect the headphones for work it correctly.
2) increasing the volume from the gnome menu near the clock, this often gets stuck and you have to click multiple times

So now you can hear the sounds, but the system is not correctly functioning. For more information or help contact me

This bug is now becoming so full up with different hardware and software configurations that it is an incredible mess to sort them all out, see http://drowninginbugs.blogspot.com/2010/04/public-service-announcement-when-in.html for an explanation of why.

If there are anyone actually still having a bug with the latest Ubuntu release, and is not the original bug reporter (jayarbie), please file separate bugs.

Thanks for understanding.
