Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-notifier

I've been running Jaunty since Alpha 3 on my eeepc 900 and have not yet seen update-manager appear in the background. What I *have* been seeing in my workflow is my session disappear every few days on resume (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/322202). Note that I rarely logout or reboot (just suspend / resume).

I'm filing this under update-notifier since I suspect that is what is driving this new process.

Last night I got tired of waiting for the update notification to get "fixed" and found https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/322202.

Putting my feelings aside on that issue I'm wondering if I'm hitting a scenario that the update-manager devs will never see due to the normal development / testing process (e.g. they don't go several days in a row with suspend-resume cycles and no logoff or reboot).

SUGGESTIONS:
1) Have update-notifier (I'm assuming that is what pops up update-manager in the new world) log what it is doing so that these activities can be coorlated with the loss of session problem.
2) Start pushing update-notifier / update-manager daily as "security" updates until shortly (1 week) before release to get more milage / testing on the new update notification mechanism.

If this behavior is already logged please point me to what to look for and I'll try and add more detail to this bug. Thanks!

There is data loss with this bug (whatever the cause). The repro scenario:
1) Run Firefox and add a folder / bookmark
2) Leave Firefox running and stay logged in.
3) Suspend / Resume the system / charge over night
4) Wait until the session is lost (have to log in on Resume

Expected: When I log out using the menus the bookmark I have created is saved and available the next time I log in and run Firefox

Observed: The new bookmark data is lost

Completed the script at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting and added my results. Unfortunately this test didn't expose the problem. It only happens every 24-48 hours and I haven't been able to see any pattern.

Haven't seen this happen in > 1 week, so more recent updates must have fixed it.

This problem also occurs on my recently updated intrepid ibex system, so the error persists there.

Today I upgraded to Jaunty, so hopefully this problem disappears as per Walter_Wittel above, but I'm always concerned when problems get fixed and we don't know why because they can then pop back up with to leads in sight...
