Bug Description

This is a "Boombox" Philips Micro HiFi System model MCM595 with the "PC Link" feature. It's detected bye ALSA and even the mixer shows up. But testing sound with it does not work. I've tested sound redirecting it with System -> Preferences -> Sound ... and even with MPlayer assigning the hw0.1 in the alsa mplayer module.

This is the system configuration:

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains in Jaunty, Please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic <bug #>

If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Care to do one more test using the latest Karmic 9.10 Alpha release? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . It contains a newer 2.6.31 based kernel and you should be able to test using a LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Hi,
I come up with a solution using libusb. The connection protocol lacks (at least) two packets that switch on the sound on the HiFi.
I made a C script that works with MCM530, but it should also work with MCM5xx
https://github.com/nheir/usb_pc_link
The readme describes the missing packets.

Thank you Henri D for your solution ! It works fine for me (Philips MCM530, debian wheezy), it just needs root privileges.
If you haven't already proposed to the alsa dev team to include your code, it would be really great to do so !
