Bug Description

Since upgrading to Intrepid, the WLAN LED of my HP nc6000 blinks all the time instead of simply being on.

Bug #176090, which is about the LED not working at all in Hardy, seems to suggest that the blinking might be intentional, "Note, however, that[the fix for Hardy] does not behave the same way as it used to. The light will not blink on and off, but will be steady."

However, the blinking is (a) highly distracting and annoying for no gain whatsoever, and (b) it does not blink in Windows, either.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I installed the following packages in Ubuntu 8.04.1 running on a HP Pavilion dv6000 (dv6626us) and the wireless network connection stopped to work completely:

    linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic_2.6.27.1.1_i386.deb
    linux-image-2.6.27-1-generic_2.6.27-1.2_i386.deb
    linux-restricted-modules-2.6.27-1-generic_2.6.27-1.1_i386.deb

Do I need to install any other package to test kernel 2.6.27?

Well, I think I figured out what was missing: /lib/firmware/2.6.27-1-generic/iwlwifi-3945* files

But there is no linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.27-1-generic package available yet and I just copy the files manually.

Now the wireless is working and blinking all time when there is an active wireless connection as reported by Mario.

Mario Vukelic (kreuzsakra) wrote :

Marcos, I did not have this problem, my wireless worked automatically with 2.6.27. Maybe you are missing some metapackage?

Anyway, I'd like to make another correction, in case that's somehow important: the light does not blink "all the time", as I wrote. Instead, it alternates between blinking and steady states. Often it's steady for a minute, possibly more. At other times it's blinking a lot. I can see no obvious rhythm or correlation with anything, though.

I see the blinking on Intrepid. It seems to have a funny pattern, like

if traffic
              for (n=0; n<5; n++)
                       led on for 250 ms;
                       led off for 250 ms;

As opposed to just blinking in direct correlation to traffic, like the led on the back of an ethernet adapater.

if packet
            blink for 10 ms

try
]$ ping google.com

and you will see what I mean.

So I agree, the blinking serves little informative purpose (it does not relate very well to actual traffic) and that makes it annoying. For me, either a solid led or blinking on actual traffic would be preferable.

Sebastian Breier (tomcat42) wrote : Re: Intrepid: WLAN LED blinks incessantly on iwl3945 | iwl4965 laptop

I'd like to note (as said in duplicate Bug #252150) that blinking on traffic is bad behavior in terms of usability.

A blinking LED (or GUI element, ...) is hard to ignore, and will in most humans gain focus constantly, and annoy them.
Both "having traffic" as well as "being connected" are standard cases for a network interface, so in those standard cases there is no need for the interface to request focus by blinking the LED.

On the other hand, the LED can be allowed to blink (not rapidly) when there is no connection, which is usually an unwanted case.

The comparison to ethernet adapter LEDs can be considered - however, those are usually out of sight of the operating user, while WLAN LEDs are usually in sight.

I think what bugs me about this one is how periodic the blinking is. It's really begging for attention.

What if it was on when wireless was enabled, but just flickered a little bit on traffic? I'm thinking similar to what the LED on a network switch does: On means connected, but it flicks off almost imperceptibly when traffic is running.

I had a look at the new Tx/Rx blinking and made changes to make it less annoying for me as seen with
the big bright LED on my HP dv5000. The really distracting part is the slow blinking with long periods
of off and on. I changed the driver to have uniformly short off_time values of 10 in the blink_tbl array.
That gives a little flicker when there is network activity without a really distracting effect. The off times
could be set even lower to make the blinking barely discernable.

I have attached a patch that implements the change. If other folks think that is more like they want
I could try pushing this upstream.

I retrieved the kernel source (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelGitGuide), installed the build utilities, did "make net/drivers/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl3945.ko", copied the drivers to /lib/modules/2.6.27-6-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi, but it says:
"FATAL: Error inserting iwl3945 (/lib/modules/2.6.27-6-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl3945.ko): Invalid module format"

Wireless lights almost never are, however, and any thing flashing in the eye line is going to draw attention. As such, it should only blink if something unusual has happened. 'Getting some data' isn't unusual, as Mario Vukelic says.

That page says:
----
If you prefer a more detailed, itemized definition, a paper cut is:

    * A bug, or an unintended problem occurring within an existing
piece of software,
    * the presence of which makes a computer more difficult or less
pleasant to use,
    * that is easy to fix,
    * that the average user would encounter during his/her first day of using...
    * ...Ubuntu Desktop Edition* as configured by a default installation.

If a potential paper cut fails to meet any of the criteria above, it
is not a paper cut.
----
As far as I can tell, this bug meets all of those criteria.

Do you realize that another bug exists > Bug #176090
That bug is for the blink not working. And that bug too has several users/duplicate wanting this feature.

So which side to pick? if this is fixed with the script given here , it will aggravate those users.
What I'm saying is , this needs a fix more than the present workaround , Because:

1: *Blinking is the default behavior in several other laptops* [in Windows also] , it is the indicator of network activity.
2: The hardware and *all* the different laptops manufactured need to be matched, to fix this bug. So it is not a a simple fix.

Hope it is clearer.

This needs to be fixed , But is not a papercut.

Tom Chiverton (bugs-launchpad-net-falkensweb) wrote :

@Adam Porter: Exactly. I thought I had addressed this in my response, but yours is even clearer.

@mac_v: "Blinking is the default behavior in several other laptops [in Windows also" - I have used many laptops (I work in IT) and have *never* seen one who's default wireless light behaviour is to flash the user visible light all the time. Even on Windows.

#176090 appears initially to be about the light being off (as opposed to doing something), but later turns into 'it used to flash, now it is steady'.
My experience over a number of versions has been the light went from always-on to always-off to flashing-always to fixed-with-the-help-of-the-script-here.
Therefore the correct fix for everyone would be to keep this configurable but default it to how it was i.e. always-on or the more useful always-on-when-connected-flash-when-connecting-off-when-disconnected.

I'm not sure what you mean about "all the different laptops manufactured need to be matched". Either change the default in the kernel source with a Ubuntu-specific patch, or add the scripted commands via the laptop-mode package (etc. etc.).
The 'cat' is harmless if the files don't exist, but it's trivial to check for the files existence first, for instance.

I'm not sure why you guys *even think* that people have to misrepresent themselves ! The blinking was never a feature request!

@Tom Chiverton:
Further, *a hardware specific issue is not a papercut* .

You seem to be aware of the way to fix this issue, kindly provide a patch, which could be incorporated in the kernel.

It *doesn't even need a kernel patch*. The script several comments up just needs including in a suitable package (I'm thinking whatever provides laptop-mode).
If I knew how to start that process, I would have :-)

The underlying problem is no way for end users to control this behaviour - an /etc/sysconfig/wireless-led-mode file, if you like. Does the community need to come up with the whole infrastructure to support this ourselves ? If it did, how would we get it shipped ? Just attach the file and init.d script here ?

This is terrible default behaviour, doubly so on laptops/netbooks.

If you have a desktop, you can't see the light (it's around the back 9/10 times), and so the status LED is unimportant.

However, if you have a smaller device, the LED light is likely to be very visible, and blinking (attracting attention) while it is in a normal, safe, working state is a poor UI.

Ok, for those guys who might be wondering how to "install" or those who do not have wlan.conf in the specified place.
For me, the wlan.conf was not there. I created and put the line there, but modprobe won't detect it.
Specially people with iwlagn driver on the 4965AGN card.

Step 1 : # cd /etc/modprobe.d
Step 2 : locate whatever wireless related file you have. Mine was intel-5300-iwlagn-disable11n.conf.
                  # ls
Step 3 : Edit the file using gedit, nano or vi whatever you are comfortable with.
                   # sudo gedit intel-5300-iwlagn-disable11n.conf
Step 4 : Put the line [options iwlcore led_mode=1] and save the file. Exit gedit.
Step 5 : Re-initiate the driver.
                  # sudo modprobe -r iwlagn (To temp unload it)
                  # sudo modprobe iwlagn (To load it back)
Step 6: Enjoy your troublefree Ubuntu. Report back if nessecary.

options iwl_legacy led_mode=1

(But I have sometimes seen the light remain off when the the wlan device is active on 11.11.)

Again I'm returning this to Fix Released for the development kernel. It seem that the option was just renamed.

I believe the correct fix, from a UX point of view, would be for Ubuntu to ship with the 'dont flash lights at the user all the time' setting on.

I have already posted a bug report against bug: 857858.
This is what I posted there:

I'm on 12.04 beta at the moment too. Up till now this has not affected me, but there seems to have been a regression. My indicator light now keeps blinking. I have a: INTEL PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN card in my laptop

If anyone lands here because of this issue in quantal 12.10... I found that the module name changed so the iwl_legacy led_mode=1 option doesn't work any longer.

You need to change it to:
options iwlegacy led_mode=1

Note there is only one 'l' in the module name.

Also, I believe the name of the .conf file doesn't matter so I put my option in 'iwl_led.conf' so that the next upgrade will leave it alone.

This ancient bug seems to still affect old laptops when they are resurrected using ubuntu 16.04. Running the iwl3945 wireless driver on this HP laptop will result in the LED blinking on traffic. Adding the module option fixes the problem. I find it hard to believe that isn't the default for all drivers.

David Dombrowsky, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux
