Bug Description

Installed version 7.10 months ago and always included updates along the way. Never had to use ndiswrapper. Had no problems with my Linksys wireless PCI card working OK with WEP encryption. Upgraded to 8.04 and my wireless capability quit working altogether (did not recognize my router). I followed troubleshooting guides from ubuntu.com to check for driver, device, ipv6, etc., but the Linksys card could not reach the router. BTW, one trouble-shooting guide says to go to SYSTEM->PREFERENCES -> HARDWARE INFORMATION, but there is no “HARDWARE INFORMATION” menu item! After much frustration, I finally hit the ESC key during the reboot sequence to get a chance to boot from an older version (see list from “/boot” below). Sure enough, I booted from the next newer version (config-2.6.22-14-generic), and had no problem with my wireless card. The kernel associated with config-2.6.24-16-generic is the version that did not work. After that good reboot from the older version, the output from the command “lshw –C network” follows (network:1 is the wireless card).

What can I do to fix this?

Output from “lshw –C network” after booting from older version:

I had a similar problem with a Ralink-driver (2570). See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/237144.

I was able to get my network running again by downloading the latest drivers from serial-monkey http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page.

I looks that the proper driver is not shipped with the kernel, so I have to recompile the project
each time I upgrade to a new linux-kernel

There hasn't been any recent activity in this bug report and we were wondering if this is still an issue? The Ubuntu kernel team is actively working on the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. If you could please test the latest Alpha release for Intrepid it would be much appreciated - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. If the issue still exists, please also provide the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance.

Yes...still an issue. Others have also had problems with wireless
connections on 8.04. I'm still booting from the older kernel generated
last Feb 2008, but still installing updates along the way. Seems
strange that the old kernel still works with all the updates through
August 2008.

If you want, I can install and test 8.10 next week and give it a try.
I'd be happy to send you appropriate debugging information. I may, in
effect, be "burning my bridge" behind me by possibly not being able to
go back to the old kernel, but I think it's worth the risk, and there's
no use in keeping on with the old kernel.

Thanks for getting back to me!

Thanks Gary.

You should be able to test the latest Alpha for Intrepid via a LiveCD so there shouldn't be any risk to your existing system/setup. Also, before you do that can you try installing the linxu-backports-modules package for Hardy. It has an updated version of the rt2x00 drivers from serialmonkey which may help your situation. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thank you very much Leann for your efforts.

The wireless network was working and is still working after the latest kernel-upgrade. (Most likely the driver I compiled
a month or three ago is still valid?)

I'm working with kernel uname -r -> 2.6.24-19-generic
and installed the backport-modules

dpkg -l | grep backport

backport-modules should fail).

My Linux PC is temporarily out of commission for different reasons, but
it was working fine with the newest updates just a week ago. Somewhere
along the line the updates to 8.04 fixed the problem. I cannot really
pinpoint exactly when those updates fixed the problem. Sorry.....thanks
for checking back.
