Bug Description

I recently installed Hardy and tried to connect to my wepprotected internet with Dlink DWL-G650+. I press the networkicon in the panel and puts in my password. It spins for a couple of seconds, then the whole applet disapperas and the capslocklamp on my laptop start to blink (think it measns kernel panic)

Thank you for your bug report. However, it's not complete yet. Can you please attach the following files:
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/dmesg
Can you also please tell what's the output of uname -r and attach the output of lspci in a separate file?
Thanks in advance.

It looks like the time when the bug occurred isn't in the error logs. Can you please reproduce the problem, reboot and check if the exact time the crash happened is in /var/log/kern.log.0 or in /var/log/kern.log If it's in the first file I mentioned please attach it with /var/log/dmesg.0. If that time is in the other file please attach /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/dmesg again.
Sorry for the trouble.
Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The card, DWL-G650 makes my machines crash under 8.10 and 8.04.
Kernel 2.6.27-9-generic

In a newly installed and fully updated Thinkpad R40 and in a T30 it freezes and the caps lock pulses.
The card works fine in that other OS from Seattle.

...after the freeze there is a reboot and then a flashcard to move the files.

The above R40 has an old mini pci card (wlan) inside - I have another R40 without that card but the only differens is that it takes a bit longer to crash when you have the mini pci card inside.

Keep up the good work.

Hi nordberg,

Would you be willing to give the latest pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 a test? - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a newer 2.6.28 based kernel. It would be good to know if this issue remains. You should be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Hi guys

I think I'm experiencing the same bug.

About 15-30 seconds after inserting my DWL-G650+ card the machine freezes and the CAPS Lock light starts blinking.

I am running 8.10 with all updates including proposed and backports and still getting the same issue.

uname - r returns: "2.6.27-12-generic"
(NB I'm passing nosmp to the kernel at boot to workaround another bug causing system freezes there are several numbers for this (e.g #22643), I don't believe this is related as if I put up with the other bug and test inserting the card I still get the crash and flashing CAPS lock, but mentioning it for completeness)

I've attached an lspci listing obtained after the card is inserted (in the 30 seconds or so before the machine crashes)

I will attach kern.log and dmesg logs below.

For reference I've downloaded the Desktop version of 9.04 alpha 4 from the link above, and ran it in Live CD mode, I get the same problem.

I've just looked at the output of dmesg for the current session now and it's showing more than the log file I've attached, so I'm attaching the output of "dmesg > dmesg.txt" incase it's of any more use.

NB: This is the same session where I plugged in then remove the wireless card before the crash happened to get the lspci output above.

Please let me know if you need older logs or extra info, this machine hasn't got anything critical on it at present due to the number of issues I've had with getting 8.10 working so I can afford to mess around with it to try to get more info/test fixes.

Cheers

If this issue remains with the final Jaunty release - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download, could you attach updated dmesg output for this newer release (ie it has a 2.6.28 based kernel). Thanks.
