Bug Description

Audio broke with a kernel update. Using newer kernels than 2.6.24-12, I have no access to volumes/mixer.

I get the following errors:

No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.
This is what I use for audio:

Affected Devices:

00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce Audio Processing Unit (rev a2)
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 AC97 Audio Controler (MCP) (rev a1)

Does anyone know of new instructions to set-up nForce2 AC97?

This look like the same problem on my Acer Aspire 9810 with kernel 2.6.24-15.

$cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---

but KinfoCentre reports that I have an intel 82801G (ICH7) HD audio controller

It use to work. even with hardy up until yesterday. Now it can't even see the sound card.

Audio currently works, although does not play nice with all apps. Close Bug.

Audio out works. The Microphone on this device does not seem to work. I'm guessing the fix that was released does not work/was not tested. Testing this on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe.

Testing sound capture brings back error: Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'

Hi,

Sorry for the extremely delayed response here. Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please let us know your results.

Additionally, beginning with the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 development cycle the linux-ubuntu-modules package was actually merged with the linux kernel package. Going forward, bugs that would have been reported against linux-ubuntu-modules should now just be reported against linux. I'll go ahead and open the linux task for this report. Unfortunately against lum-2.6.24 this will be closed as this does not qualify for a Stable Release Update. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Reinstalled nvida driver including patch per these instructions:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=253725

After installation set all system-preference-sound test tabs to OSS not Auto! Now sound works for line out but not rear channel or bass/center. Also, line out sound has continuous loud static. The line out static was also present in Gutsy Gibbon. Although I had at some point during Gutsy an ALSA configuration that allowed bass/center channel to work without static. No idea what i did and i cant repeat it.

My motherboard is the Asus A7N8X Deluxe.

Hi komputes,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 213633

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I can no longer comment on this bug as my motherboard got fried while beta testing Jaunty.

As my motherboard is fried, this bug report will need to be continued by the owner of an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to close this for now since you are the original bug reporter. If anyone else has the hw and is able to verify this issue remains, feel free to reopen this by setting the status back to "New". Or you can also open a new bug report. Thanks.
