no sound hardy kernel 2.6.27.11-generic

same here, this should go to critical priority, its a BAD thing right now, causes a lot of other program on my machine to crash.

I can confirm this problem. Sound with kernel 2.6.24-11-generic works, but it doesn't work in kernel 2.6.24-12-generic any more.

hi, just wanted to add: same problem here. sound is pretty broke with 2.6.24.12, worked beautifully with *.11 though.

Just updated from -11 to -12 and have the same problem.

my laptop is MSI ER710, and got no sound with 2.6.24-12, part of the dmesg:

I can confirm the bug also. VIA Vinal 97 sound will not work with the 2.6.24-12 kernel.

Confirming this bug on my Compaq Evo n400c notebook with ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro-1 (rev 12) soundcard. There are many "Unknown symbol" lines in dmesg concerning various snd* modules.

This seems to be a Beta blocker.
Milestoning and setting Critical priority.

SND_PROCFS and SND_INTEL8 is missing here too.

There are massive diffs between the -11 .config and the -12 .config (see attached diff). Most notable, a big chunk of sound stuff is gone.

Bug report #200354 is also a duplicate (unfortunately filed by me). I can still boot into -11, but for some reason I have been unable to figure out dcopserver is broken when booting into the earlier kernel. That is, I either get sound or functional KDE 3.x apps but not both.

sound works when booting into -11. sound doesnt work at all when in -12. says problem with volume control gstreamer.

update: i have installed alsa with drivers from the alsa web site. The probem persists after sucessfull install, so its not a alsa problem but a kernel problem.

now i am back to ubuntu packages of alsa, still no sound.

module "soundcore" does not exist in 2.6.24-12, but it does exist in 2.6.24-11. And it seems to be needed to load module "snd"

This is a big "me too" on my machine, freshly upgraded to hardy, and up to date as of a few seconds ago. Unresolved symbols galore in sound modules.

We don't need any more ME TOOs! We know this affects everybody! (unless you are running the -rt kernel apparently)

Temporary solution: revert to kernel 2.6.24-11

How long till the fix makes it to update manager?

I guess it will need a few hours until all the affected packages are rebuilt.

Quick workaround:
- fetch linux-source-2.6.24
- untar /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.24.tar.bz2
- copy /boot/config-2.6.24-12-generic /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.24/source/.config
- cd into /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.24
- run: make oldconfig (shouldn't be needed, but for safety)
- run: make menuconfig
- go to device drivers -> sound
- set sound card support to "m"
- go back and save the config
- run: make scripts prepare
- run: make SUBDIRS=sound modules
- run: cp sound/soundcore.ko /lib/modules/2.6.24-12-generic
- run: depmod -a
- load your sound card module e.g. snd-hda-intel by running: modprobe snd-hda-intel
- everything works again, not even a reboot needed

If you don't know what your sound card module is, just reboot and it'll automatically get loaded

Have got the updates, and sound card was detected, but mainly getting static-type sounds, no lisetnable sound. Card: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01).

Also updated to the new kernel. Nvidia card is not recognized, so even if I have sound, I end up with very low-res graphics and that's not usable. Back to -11 till this new problem is solved.

I have the same problem of Kenneth, updated to the new kernel, but my nvidia card is not recognized, back again to the old kernel...

You have to copy "nvidia.ko" from "/lib/modules/<version>/kernel/drivers/video" from "-11" to "-12" version, and do "depmod -a". But in "-12" version sensors didn't work too, and "console-kit-daemon" segfaulted on startup (and my VTs were unusable because everyhing was drawn in black !). Is that fixed too?

Upgraded to the Fixed Kernel, and all seems to be running fine, except one key issue - no audio with VLC, running everything running through PulseAudio in System>Preferences>Sound I get a Test tone, but change the audio to alsa, esd, and oss and I get no feed back with a Test Tone. VLC is dependent upon alsa,esd, or oss support to playback audio in movies - so even now kernel 2.6.24-11 seems to be the only option for those that want fully supported sound, 2.6.24-12 seems to only support PulseAudio.

My Soundcard is a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS.

It's OK for me, I upgrade my kernel and it works perfectly. Thanks you very much Ben

After the Sound fix on Kernel 2.6.12-14 the Nvidia graphic couldn't detected correctly. proprietary driver are not installed but in 2.6.11 still installed.
Graphic card is Nvidia GeForce 6100 NForce 405 (Chip)

I have no idea what happened, but now it is working again... did a few
tinkering in the actual Volume Control, but nothing major, and now VLC
is working as it should. Hopefully this becomes a non issue.

Thanks for the hint about depmod -a. I just installed the 3rd attempt at 2.6.24-12 and the Nvidia card was not recognized, again. Got root, did depmod -a, rebooted, and all is well for now. What a roller-coaster this release has been!

With this new kernel (2.6.24-12.20) sensors don't work (for temperature) and "console-kit-daemon" segfaults and leaves VTs unusable. Anybody else having this issues? Me personaly - I'm gonna avoid this "-12" series like plague :)

rasta_freak, you can file a new bug on those issues (two separate bugs, that is), if you feel it to be necessary, since this bug was reported about sound and is solved as such (video, sensors, mouse or even USB-mug-warmer issues are not covered by this bugreport).

By the way, I have no problems with sensors or VTs running -12.20 amd64 kernel on my system.

Regarding rasta_freak's message, I did a re-install to then Update to
kernel
2.6.24-12-generic which restored sound and vision. As to temperatures,
Panel Weather Reports working OK and EnvyNG-conferred GPU Thermal
Monitor is also fine, otherwise I don't know what he's referring to.
My outstanding problems appear to be with audio-visual multi-tasking, which
is great in Gutsy, but flakey in Hardy Alpha-6.

2.6.24-12-generic still does not work for me. I get a blank screen after the progress bar. When I tried the recovery menu, text on the root console disappear. I only get a blinking cursor. I typed gdm (without actually seeing it on the screen), i get "failure to initialilze HAL" when I log on.
I'm attaching syslog and lspci.
Hardy works fine with 2.6.24-11-generic. any ideas?

For me, I upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04 Beta yesterday (2008-03-22) and the linux-image-2.6.24-12-386 kernel did not allow me to play audio.

When I booted using the linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic kernel, however, my audio worked. Hope that helps =)

Brettalton, that's not this bug. That's bug 188287.

I found the same thing my sound problem went away when I went from the i386 to the generic kernel, although I had to reinstall the appropriate nvidia drivers. The mystery is how I mistakenly ended up with the i386 kernel by default.

I had the same problem yesterday. Upgrading to Hardy made i386 kernel
installed, but only the main part of kernel.
I installed linux-i386 (to have additionnal drivers installed) and then
sound worked.

even for me no sound after upgrade from 7.10 and kernel generic doesn't work at all.
I've tried to uninstall/reinstall alsa package... but no effect.

HI guys, I solved, now WFM :)

I noticed that the kernel modules were not installed (why???); only the -generic kernel modules were installed (but this kernel won't boot on my dell latitude D620)

So try this

$ sudo apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-12-386

and restart the system

Now the sound works and the wireless connection too :)

Someone have to fix this.

Make sure you are not running the 386 kernel (unless you have to) or make sure the linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-12-386 is installed if you must run it. That was the problem for me and others after the upgrade.

No sound on my laptop after latest updates. It worked before Eastern.

it offered x164 Updates rather than Sunday's x52 Updates
and they must be better coded, because most of my problems
have vanished, so try a fresh install !

Got it to work!
I have upgraded to 8.04 since Alpha 1.
When I linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic was installed, sound stopped working. Tried so many ideas but none worked.

THERE IS NO POINT KEEP ADDING TO THIS BUG.

This bug is fixed, and was a specific problem with a version of the kernel.
Any other sound problems belong in their own bugs, nobody will notice any
here as it is fixed.

probably down to the new kernel/hardware interface
I am using a Gigabye G31MX-S2 board/F4 BIOS
with Realtek HD sound, hosting an E2160 CPU,
probably the most critical elements for sound.
However I am still experiencing some Exaile/Kaffeine
conflict, which does not not happen with Ubuntu 7.10

Same here, sound is not working in new kernel

I just upgrade to Ubuntu Hardy, and sound gone off. Then I installed alsamixergui, and I saw that sound is muted. It was not shown on console version of alsamixer. The problem was that, the main channel is muted. I unmute it, and worked.

This is probably obvious, but make sure you have the "restricted" module packages installed, i.e.
 'linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16-generic'
 'linux-restricted-modules-common'
 'linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic'

That should take care of pretty much everything.

^agreed mine was missing the linux-ubuntu-modules 2.6.24-19 generic package. Installed and now everything is fine.

I have the linux-ubuntu-modules 2.6.24-19 generic package and still doesn't work.
It did work with some previous modules like the linux-ubuntu-modules 2.6.24-16
but after the upgrade stoped working again.
May it be a conflict with VirtualBox?

It seems that for some Dell hardware, snd-hda-intel.ko is modified to accomodate hsfmodem. This broke sound for me on an Inspiron 1525 for the Intel soundcard.

I don't have a dell computer neither that file renamed.
Now I use the 2.6.24.14 kernel and the sound works fine.
Maybe I should make a clean install, since I have upgrated form the 7.10

@Leo: May I suggest the following?
- Authorize the hardy-proposed channel and install the 2.6.24.20 kernel and the related 2.6.24.20 modules. It will create a new module directory for this kernel (differnent from the .19 one). If your problem comes from something gone wrong when upgrading gutsy to hardy, this may solve your problem.
OR
- Download the Hardy Live CD, and boot on it to see if you get sound. If it does, a clean install is your best shot.

As for your previous comment, I have the virtualbox kernel module installed and it works for me.

If I kill pulseaudio, it works again. I tried reinstalling pulseaudio (suggested in another bugreport), but didnt worked.

The sound worked on a new installation of 8.04 - then crapped out immediately after Virtualbox ose-modules were installed. Still wrestling on the restoration of audio but it is definitely the Virtualbox module that caused the problem.

Have you tried uninstalling virtualbox modules to see if sound comes back?
If this is the case indeed, can you attach here the dmesg without the virtualbox modules, when the sound is working and with the virtualbox modules, when the sound isn't working?

apologies anagor for the delayed response - it has been a hellova week for me - the sound issue was way down on the agenda.
I have uninstalled the vitualbox-ose modules and after a reboot it has not solved the problem.

The sound does however return when I boot with "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic"
on grub boot options as opposed to the current "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-386" where the sound does not work. I have posted both dmesg as attachments

Now I know the short term fix to that one (just boot with the working kernel) but that is the sole reason yourself and most of us are registered users and take part in this whole exercise - we would not simply accept the temp fix as a final solution - we need to get to the bottom of it, right?

I have attached my dmesg - within the test file are two sections - NOSOUND and SOUNDWORKING

I can't say anything from the dmesg, since no sound/alsa drivers are loaded in kernel, only in userspace, but if I remember correctly the ubuntu kernels are all generic for some time now, so the 64bit and 386 should be the same.
Therefore the question is why do you need the 386 kernel?
And your issue is probably the alsa drivers failing because they think the aren't compatible with 386 kernel.

This is not a bug for Dell Installs (and I think for other OEM installs). Maybe somebody should filter out comments reporting bug on OEM or modified installs (i.e. modules package not from ubuntu repos) and take in account only bugs occuring on pure ubuntu install.

On Dell Laptops, if you have modem support your modules comes from Dell ppa. If you want modem *and* sound working together you must stay with Dell ppa packages. Maybe you should stick the modules package version to Dell ppa repos.

As you can see, there is no Dell version of 2.6.24-24, so sound is broken when you update because you get package from ubuntu updates.

Remember : internal modems and sound chips are tied in hardware, so OEMs had to adapt sound modules to get modem working properly.
