Bug Description

Please, this is a Feature Request.
In my notebook there is a Ralink wlan device.
In Gutsy and Feisty, driver fails; I did it works only with rt73-cvs-2007072709 version from CVS.
It seems Network Manager applet is uncompatible with this driver. NM is compatible just with the new version of this driver, rt2x00, but it fails with my hardware.
Could you update it in Gutsy, to this version?

The Original newest driver from the RaLink site works for me
(Ubuntu feisty 64-bit)

There and then the newest driver

If you install it you first must run make configure (or make config) and set the path to your kernel sources (it defaults to a wrong directory)
and then just follow the manual

then if you make it and pit the etc/Wireless/RT73STA firmware and its config file in place it should work
network manager then at least sees your card (as a wired link but it at least works)

then you can set your SSID etc in etc/Wireless/RT73STA/rt73sta.dat
scanning works only with iwpriv "sudo iwpriv rausb0 get_site_survey"

then set the good ssid in the config file and there you go
just click the unknown usb wired device in network manager

The CVS from rt2x00 dont work for me

so I hope ubuntu puts this driver in gutsy, with this dirver being able to compile for 32 and 64-bit
and if then its nicely integrated in the network manager then rt73 user dont have such a hassle getting this wlan card to work

I could write a Java program to front a GUi for scanning for networks and connecting to them, but that would be less nice since all other cards work with network manager. And since im not that good with C to change the driver so it works with the network manager i Hope someone from ubuntu can do it

And i know its possible cause PCLINIXOS supports this driver out of the box

(Just see this as the 2nd reply as a feature request)

Sincerely, Bram

wow pclinux os sucks, and ubuntu still hasnt fixed this in ubuntu gutsy beta, this problem has been sitting around for a while, the driver was poorly coded, a fix has been released but needs to be added to ubuntu:

A status update on this fix would be appreciated to us all, and a few questions im sure we all are wondering/waiting for...
Is this being worked on?
Is there a patch/solution?
Who is in charge of the compatibility/coding of this driver?
Will it be fixed before Gutsy is released?
Why has the ralink drivers not been working well in ubuntu for the past 5-6 releases?

We all love Ubuntu and unfortunately us users with belkin/ralink drivers can not see the full beauty and usability of this great new os, I know it is a goal/standard to make Ubuntu run straight out of the box for anything, if we could resolve this issue it would be more than appreciated, maintainers/dev's please search for ralink, rt73, belkin, and other problems because there should be none, we want this os to be grandparent friendly/new user friendly.
Thankyou & Best Regards,
Kyle Weller

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
