Bug Description

Binary package hint: casper

hi,

I found it takes more than half a minute to load ACPI modules and start HALd on my Thinkpad R51e-2xc, with Feisty RC live CD.
The computer looks dead in those two steps.

This problem happened at the first release of Feisty Beta and it was ok after once I upgraded the system.
But now it happened again.

here is the dmesg result. Some errors are related to ACPI:

I have exactly same problem with my thinkpad R51e and feisty fawn. The slow boot happens due to acpi stuff, in particular it takes ibm_acpi and battery modules ~20s and 1m to load respectively.

Current work around that I use is blacklisting them. To do this add

blacklist ibm_acpi
blacklist battery

to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Hi guys,

I have a R51e ThinkPad with exactly the same problem. You can solve this both ways:

1) the way Leha explained it above, or
2) by adding "acpi=off" at the end of the "kernel /boot/vmlinuz-...." line in /boot/grub/menu.lst

Both ways sacrifice the important ability to see how much battery-time I have left.

If you find a way to check your battery-time with the acpi disabled, or a different work-around, please post it here. Thanks.

GC

The issue appears to lie in kernel "kernel 2.6.20-15-generic". I booted with kernel "kernel 2.6.17-11-generic" and the issues resolved. HALD and ACPI loads fine once again.

The fix would be to load an older kernel image, or if you did an upgrade, just set the default to the older kernel.

I wonder if there is a patch for the kernel being worked on?

I have the same thing on my thinkpad R40e. I found this bug on kernel.org so it looks like it isn't a ubuntu specific issue.

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8246

The good news is that as a workaround you can add ec_intr=0 to your kernel options. This worked for me. My system is back at full speed and battery monitor etc work fine, though I have to admit that I'm not sure what this option changes, but it's a better option than blacklisting the battery and ibm_acpi modules that I was doing before.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process.
