Bug Description

Another release of fiesty and a well reported problem still not fixed.
The forums have plenty of information on how to get DLINK G122 C1 wifi usb pen working

These two threads show the work needed to get all the RALINK rt73 chip working

I can confirm this bug in the release of Feisty. I have a D-Link G122 USB stick Rev C1, and the rt2570 gets loaded which makes gdm go funny, like when I type in my username and password the key gets 'stuck' and will repeat the input with the stuck key until you press backspace.

The solution I have used is based on the Wiki link on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=375848, which asks me to blacklist both rt73usb (the next one that gets loaded after you blacklist rt2570) and rt2570. rt73usb IS NOT able to connect to my WPA network and says the security on the network is not supported, although it works on Windows XP (just to show the wifi adapter is WPA capable).

After compiling rt73 and loading it, the Network Manager does not show any Wireless networks. I am able to get it to connect to my AP through entries in /etc/network/interfaces.

I am able to see the interfaces in iwconfig and ifconfig after I load the rt73 module.

Hope this helps.

Yes, sort of. I went to another thread and found out there was an older
version of the ralink drivers that worked, and used that instead. :)

Thanks for pointing that thread out though.

Going to an older version (Ralink's legacy drivers) might work, but IMO it's not a good solution for Ubuntu itself.

Progress

The usb Wifi works out of the box on Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 3 you do of course have to set up the WPA via network manager.

But there is still a small bug during closedown or bootup the password for WPA gets corrupted and has to be reset before the WiFi will work.

I agree with Peter (progress!) - I put Tribe 3 on, works reasonably
well with my MSI stick - problems started happening and I've come to
the conclusion that the card is faulty. I've bought 2 new rt73 sticks
to do some serious testing. Results after my exams...

There is not a small bug I just was not using network manager properly. Once set up then if using wifi you get asked for wpa key as is right.

Hi,
on gutsy when i try to connect to a wpa2-pks network the system freezes.
the modules loaded are rt73usb and rt2x00usb if i do lsmod.
The system freezes even if i try to connect to an open network (no encryption at all!)

I would still prefer that they just pick the driver (with source) form the ralink site.
That driver just works, the only problem is that it shows up as a wired nic in network manager and you have to configure the ssid and key in a text file "/etc/Wireless/RT73STA/rt73sta.dat"

and that you can only scan with iwpriv rausb0 get_site_survey

So driver work fine but just not compatibe with nm and standard scanning methods.

But in my opinion that's still better then the rt2x00 driver wich intergrates in nm and allows scans but just cannot connect you to the wireless network.

In my eyes is
nicely integrated but not working VS partially integrated and functional.
and then I (and i think a lot of people) would prefer functional over not working, even if its less integrated.

I CAN CONFIRM THIS, same issue since dapper
Same problem here with my Belkin F5d7050-4 rev 3002:
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 050d:705a Belkin Components
I think it is a driver conflict:
Does not associate!
creates wlan0/wmaster0 and refuses to connect/associate but is able to scan, serialmonkey drivers work fine only for wep, something was changed in the kernel that crashes wpa connections...
This is a tough card, there are four known verions of this card.
802.11g F5D7050 v.1xxxx Prism54
802.11g F5D7050 v.2xxxx rt2x00
802.11g F5D7050 v.3xxxx man: 050d dev: 705a rt2x00 <--- my card
802.11g F5D7050 v. 4001 ?
 ?
802.11g F5D7050 v.4xxxx man: 050d dev: 705c ZD1211

As you can see by the table there is only 2 known device ids. However v. 2xxxx is still believed to use the ralink chipset which is support under PCLinuxOS 2007. Version 4001of this card is unknown and the v. 40000 uses the ZD1211 chipset which is also support under PCLinuxOS 2007. If you haven't purchased this card yet but want to. Take extnreme caution in making sure there's a decent return policy at the store. As by looking at the box you may not know what version you will be stuck with.

My dlink stick works fine in 7.10
Gnome network manager still scrambles the WPA password
Program WICD works 100% properly keeping the password, so I have deleted gnome network manager in favour of WICD.
Google search for WICD will find it.

I also have a D-link DWL-G122 C1 usb pen. The rt73usb.ko module doesn't work for me at all, even when no encryption is used (I had a very unstable connection ones with a lot of messages in dmesg and I had to be really close to the access point). I switched to the driver rt73.ko from the ralink site. That worked, but as mentionned above, it does work with NetworkManager and I have to configure by command line. So every time I put my laptop in standby and resume it, I have to reestablish connection by hand. :(

I've tried also the windows driver through ndiswrapper. That worked also , but not with the NetworkManager again.

Kyle...can you give me a clue on what you are doing

I have a
1) CNET CDW-845 rev 1 dongle
2) DLINK DWL-G122 H/W ver C1, F/W Ver 30 Dongle

I have the latest serial monkey driver from the daily CVS and it still produces a hardlock with the lights flashing on the keyboard. What are you doing different that gets it working for you.

Thanks.

It worked! :D

I used wpa2 with aes, truncated the key to 20 characters and it sprang to life. Although with this method I have to use the key i inputed into the router directly instead of using wpa_passphrase <ssid> <key> to generate a code to use in the interfaces file.

Thanks very much. I look forward to someone actually fixing the entire thing.
