Bug Description

I put in the Ubuntu 7.04 amd64 beta livecd, trying to boot from it. When I choose "Start or install Ubuntu", everything goes well, it gets to the Ubuntu logo splash screen with the little orange bar moving from side to side. here it stops reading the cd, and all the activity i can notice is the orange bar moving. the screen then turns black (after about 2 minutes of splash screen) and i get a screen of information being displayed at a slow pace. it starts like this (it would be great if i could upload a photo of the screen i took):

**************************************************************************
udev-event[2113]: run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit
[ 157.398576] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 169.606020] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 169.606047] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
... a bit more than a screen of similar lines ...
... ending like this:
[ 260.623572] loop: loaded (max 8 devices)
[ 260.687639] squashfs: version 3.2-r2 (2007/01/15) Phillip Louger
**************************************************************************
this is where it starts reading the cd intensely and then stops doing anything. the numbers on the left are never the same.

i also tried ubuntu amd64 herd5. the same storry, except that it gets me directly to promter. it shows something like this:

**************************************************************************
udev-event[2070]: run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu2) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands

/bins/sh: can't acces tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) _
**************************************************************************

I should also mention that Ubuntu amd64 6.10 livecd runs with no problem.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. There was an issue with the Feisty Beta CD and certain SATA controllers. Please try a daily CD image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ and let us know if that resolves your issue. Thanks in advance.

I'm seeing this same problem, with the feisty-desktop-amd64 iso downloaded today. I have a JMicron/ICH8 motherboard.

Same problem as of today. Both i386 and amd64 versions.

I'm assuming that everyone reporting this problem doesn't have a floppy drive.
I got rid of the:

udev-event[2113]: run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit

by disabling the floppy drive in my BIOS. But unfortunately the installer didn't take the hint and I still got the:

[ 157.398576] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 169.606020] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 169.606047] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0

The problem was fixed for me. I downloaded the 30.03.2007 daily desktop cd and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for retesting!

Alf Eaton, xsist10 : I will close this bug. Could you please report a _new_ bug report with the outputs of

* dmesg output (you can type in terminal dmesg > dmesg.log)
* lspci -vv and lspci -vvn output

as seperate attachments. Also mention your affected mainboards in the bug report!

I'm doint this because otherwise it will be very difficult for us to solve this bug, when the reporter says it's fixed.

I'm reading this bug report *after* i downloaded and burned the 7.04 i386 beta cd. I'm having the same problem.
After a while i get:

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu2) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands

/bins/sh: can't acces tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) _

and as xsist10 said, i have no floppy drive.
I provide the attachments of dmesg output and lspci.
My motherboard is an Asus A8V.

The problems reported here with "fd0" messages are probably the same as in bug #97306. The original reporter had maybe additional problems as in bug #84964.
