Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-9-generic

New stock Dell Dimension C521, X2-3800+, 1GB RAM, onboard nVidia. Installing feisty 64-bit daily live image from 2007-03-09. There are no problems during installation or boot, except this error message:

[ 14.343159] SMP alternatives: switching to UP code
[ 14.343320] ACPI: Core revision 20060707
[ 14.388700] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
[ 14.568921] Using local APIC timer interrupts.
[ 14.618728] result 12526129
[ 14.618730] Detected 12.526 MHz APIC timer.
[ 14.622601] SMP alternatives: switching to SMP code

The error message doesn't seem to have any negative effects.

There are a number of other similar bugs in Launchpad already, but I don't think this is a dupe. This a brand new stock Dell, and the latest Feisty daily, so this issue will probably come up for a lot of people.

It's a harmless message, the kernel detected the problem and worked around it.

I also get this message and then everything freezes. It works with noapic message as boot option, but still...

I have Nforce 4 SLI AMD chipset

I too am getting this bug on 7.04, 7.10 and 8.04 Alpha . I also get it on other Live distros but not with BlueWhite 64 and 64Studio, so figure.

Cristian's comment above about Hyper Threading worked for me! I found that DISABLING the "HPET Support" option in the BIOS (Gigabyte board, specs to follow) enabled 8.04 to boot without the error and I see from the messages that both my cores are activated (unlike when using noapic).

Specs are:
AMD X2 5200+
Gigabyte GA-M55S-S3 (Rev 1.1) with BIOS F10 (latest as at 13/12/2007) nforce 550 chipset
4G 800 RAM
nVidia 7300 GS

I'm going to try some other Live distros (Mint 4 and TrueBSD) just to check that they can load without any boot options as these had issue before.

Thanks Christian!! Now I just need to see what enabling/disabling HPET Support does....

Try to disable the cpufreq service.
It worked to me and the system is running with full acpi support, SMP, 2 cores, etc.
The only disadvantage is that it works at 3Ghz all the time.

Kyle McMartin has not commented on any bug since 2007-10-16. As such, I am moving this bug to the Ubuntu Kernel team. I would also recommend a higher priority, due to the seriousness of this problem. Also, can someone who is experiencing this bug please confirm what version of the kernel they are experiencing it with?

OK, I used to use Ubuntu, and abandoned it because of this problem.

As for my kernel version, it's the one which comes with Ubuntu 7.04 & Ubuntu 7.10

This bug describe the same bug as bug #54621 so I'll set is as a duplicate in order to help linux kernel team fixing this. There are very important informations, specifically the attached files of Cristian Aravena Romero. These informations would be very helpful if they were added to this bug report. Thanks to everybody who work on this!

I'm very new to linux but totally over windows. I've tried launching both fedora and freespire but can't get past this error. The PC is brand new...what the hell is a IO- APIC anyhow??
also included in the message is a note suggesting I try booting with the 'noapic' option but I can't find anything like that as an option in my bios. : ((

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
