Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

After a recent upgrade in Gutsy, my X server broke and I had to do sudo dpkg-reconfigure to get back to a sane screen resolution (gtk-displayconfig doesn't seem to play nice with 1280x800).

uname -a
Linux rhapsody 2.6.22-11-386 #1 Fri Sep 7 04:33:15 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

dpkg --list | grep nvidia | egrep '^ii'
ii nvidia-glx 1:1.0.9639+2.6.22.3-11.3 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org driver
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu7 NVIDIA binary kernel module common files

The message from the bug subject is when I try to manually insert the nvidia module using modprobe.

Somehow the restricted-modules package for my kernel wasn't installed. Installed that and it worked fine.

I'm marking it invalid, but I'm not sure how a kernel can be installed without the corresponding restricted-modules if it's needed by (in my case) an nvidia module.
