Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

Since I upgraded to feisty the nvidia driver didn't work anymore for my system (GForce4 ti-4200 Go). There are no error reports, the screen just stays black.

Thank you for your bug report.

OliverMay:
Please can you upload the following files from a run where it fails:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
Could you also upload the output of:
dpkg -l nvidia-\* | grep ii
?

Settings to needsinfo pending reply from Oliver.

Thanks for the quick reply,

I tried some more and found out that using the nvidia-glx-legacy driver (7184), x starts, altough without glx support (glxgears segfaults). I still have the same problems (black screen after x start) with the nvidia-glx driver (9631).

The dpkg command you requested for both the 9631 and 9755 driver:

oliver@levvietop:/root/XLogs$ cat dpkg.log-9631
ii nvidia-glx 1.0.9631+2.6.20.5-15.20 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org driver
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu7 NVIDIA binary kernel module common files
oliver@levvietop:/root/XLogs$ cat dpkg.log-9755
ii nvidia-glx-legacy 1.0.7184+2.6.20.5-15.20 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'legacy' dri
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu7 NVIDIA binary kernel module common files

I used the same Xorg.conf for both configurations, it is attached to this comment.

On a side notice, switching between nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-legacy using apt didn't "just work". I had to rmmod nvidia; insmod /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/volatile/nvidia[_legacy].ko because otherwise the x server gave incompatible driver errors or just told me it couldn't install the nvidia driver.

Hmm this bug starting to become unfocused. Generally speaking you need to reboot or manually unload the nvidia modules if you are trying to switch between versions - that's just the nature of the drivers (it is unwise to be switching kernel modules like that on the fly anyway - you never know what the state the hardware will be left in). The nvidia-glx-legacy drivers aren't the best fit for your card (but the issue you were seeing with them was Bug #63461 ) .

Finally, the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers are 71xx and the "regular" nvidia-glx drivers are 96xx. The 97xx drivers are nvidia-glx-new and aren't compatible with Geforce 4s.

Does adding
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
to the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf make any difference when you are using nvidia-glx?

Ok, that (Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DSP") fixed it right away, thanks a lot!

I seem to have mistyped the driver version in my last post, I never tried the new (9755) driver because it is not compatible with my hardware as you also noticed. I meant the legacy driver (7184) where i typed 9755. I guess the 7 confused me :)
About the module loading, just to inform you as i guess it has noting to do with this 'bug', it didn't work either when I rebooted, when x started it gave me a driver mismatch error. (Kernel: 7184, xorg module: 9631). After manually reloading the nvidia modules it worked.

Anyway, thanks for the information!
