Bug Description

It seems the Kubuntu team reached consensus to add update-notifier notification support to the screensaver support in order to enable users to obtain some sensible screensavers (none are shipped by default).
This ought to cause an appearance similar to what Amarok triggers (though in Amarok's case it recommends installation of media codecs ;))

Original description:
It seems as if KDE 4 hasn't got preinstalled screen savers. This could lead to confusion for some people as they get a black screen (ok, there's a mouse pointer, but that can bee overseen) after resuming from suspend/hibernate and could think that something has gone wrong.

Maybe it's a good idea to make kscreensaver a dependence or recommendation for kubuntu-desktop and choose one of them as standard screen saver to avoid the black screen.

Not even in Jaunty :( Screensavers are somewhat important to normal users. At least it is considered really basic stuff that should be there. (K)ubuntu IS a desktop linux and should serve as such.

Why don't Kubuntu team select the cream of the crop from the screensavers and include them. Or just if in a hurry, include the whole screensavers package by default.

Here is my point of view on this. Eventually it would make sense to either have some savers on the CD by default or at least hook a notification into the configuration module, so that users can obtain them more easily.

But. I am, politically, against using a screensaver by default. No matter how simple the saver might be, it will still consume more power than the black-screen-without-any-animation. Now that might not sound like a whole lot power saving. But consider: if every PC on this planet would come without screensaver pre-selected (no matter which OS) and say every machine is in screensaver mode one hour per year...

Eitherway our options are: either use an uberfancy opengl saver (which means we need kscreensaver to at least provide a fallback and slug-detection like kwin) or we don't use one by default but ease the pain to get some good ones installed (which mostly means hooking a notification into the module, so we don't waste CD space on savers). This absolutely needs to be discussed at a Kubuntu Meeting or the Kubuntu development mailing list which means that someone should ensure it somehow ends up in either of them ;)

step one: hook update-notifier into the KCM, not too intrusive but gives better usability
possible step two: select one or two fine default screenies to be shipped by default (that is if there is any good candidate and if we can/want to spare the CD space) ... this ought to be done via brainstorm.ubuntu.com though.

Moving bug to kdebase-workspace for addition of update-notifier support.
