Bug Description

Binary package hint: okular

Wishlist:

Okular should support inverse search for DVI documents with source-code information about the LaTeX source. In this way okular would be able to replace kdvi as a DVI viewer for kile.

Actually the okular source package contains an old version of Okular. In Intrepid on Okular lives in kdegraphics, so moving there.

Invalidating "okular" source package task. The source package "okular" contains the old KDE3 version of Okular. The current version of Okular lives in the kdegraphics KDE module.

Moving from Wishlist fro Medium since this is a capability regression from Kdvi, the KDE3 app.

... KDE 3 application that is perfectly coinstallable and usable aside Okular, FWIW.

Well, sorta. The kdegraphics package in Intrepid doesn't contain a kdvi package since it's KDE 4.1.2. There's probably nothing stopping you from getting kdvi debs from Hardy and using those, however.

But you ship Kile 2.0.x (the latest version, KDE 3), making it lame, sorta... (imagine a latex editor, without a dvi viewer...)

Can anybody explain me this? /Where/ is this support, and how could the user activate the inverse search? I did not find any reference online

This is still an issue in Jaunty. Okular has a menu for configuring the editor used for inverse search, but the inverse search itself is not implemented yet (see http://okular.kde.org/formats.php).

Inverse search is now working, starting with KDE 4.2.2 - see http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159074 and http://www.kde.org/announcements/changelogs/changelog4_2_1to4_2_2.php. However, as far as I can tell, forward search does not work yet...

Marking as fix released as okular now supports inverse search. Please open new reports if you feel that other features are missing.

Despite many efforts I have not managed to use inverse search in okular ("shift button + left mouse button"). Are you sure that okular's version present in Ubuntu supports inverse search with kile? Or is it just my computer that fails to do inverse search?

Even when inverse search works (for me it worked, but now it doesn't work for some reason), okular is a much worse previewer than kdvi. It takes more time to reload and is more unstable.

Please include kdvi back again and let us choose our favorite previewer!

This is what I call (ironically, of course) an "useful comment".
If you have issues, bugs, etc with Okular, you are invited to report them to our (= KDE) bugzilla; otherwise, statements like yours are simply pointless.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that the bug report for removing kdvi was different:

Marking as fix released again. Just tested again in jaunty, and it does work. Please note, that you need to use the "Modern" predefined for LaTex in kile (it will then pass -src-specials to latex) for it to build dvi-files that supports inverse search.
