Bug Description

Flash doesn't work with latest version of konqueror 4:3.5.8-2ubuntu14

Latest flash 9.0.115.0 uses Xembed which is still not supported by konqueror.

http://standards.freedesktop.org/xembed-spec/xembed-spec-0.5.html

4:3.5.8-2ubuntu7 version of konqueror introduced patches to support Xembed and flash but flash is still not working with konqueror installed on ubuntu with flashplugin-nonfree. Konqueror act like if flash was not installed. I didn't test this on Kubuntu yet.

It seems to be already fixed in Debian unstable

I installed the proposed packages for gutsy and removed kde4 packages. I am only getting audio playback but no visual rendering of the flash objects.

Rashad, thank you for testing!

Can we please collect some more feedback here? Testing that flash now works is important, but even more important (from a "regressions are hell" point of view) are reports that otherwise the updated packages behave as usual and don't cause any problem.

Thank you all in advance!

Test Case:

Install these packages.

Install flashplugin-nonfree

In Konqueror under Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> Plugins -> Plugins tab make sure flash is detected (if not click Scan for new)

Go to youtube.com, if flash worked, pass.

Tested on my computer, flashplugin-nonfree works without any problems with konqueror on Feisty and Gutsy 32bit. I only tested youtube, I don't use konqueror everydays. For Edgy, latest flashplugin-nonfree package is not available yet, but konqueror works without problem after installing the package from Gutsy repositories.

Verification for Dapper

* Verification wasn't really possible, with the provided testcase, for this bug since flashplugin-nonfree won't install anymore on Dapper - bug 173890 - so I updated the dapper-backports package for flashplugin-nonfree so it would install. In hindsight it might have been possible to test the bug after manually installing the flashplugin from Macromedia.
* After installing flashplugin-nonfree-9.0.48.0.0ubuntu11~dapper3 the flashplugin was still not detected by konqueror only after installing libgtk2.0-0 and libgtk2.0-bin and their dependencies was it detected. I'm not certain what was magic about that. With flashplugin-nonfree and kdebase et al from dapper-updates konqueror crashed when going to youtube.com
*After installing the proposed kdebase, kdelibs and gtk2-engines-gtk-qt youtube worked again with Konqueror

Thank you all for the work done so far.

I installed the binary packages from gutsy-proposed. I'm sorry to say, that they don't pass the test case described in comment #34 in a satisfactory way: Only the first video on youtube is displayed correctly (although nspluginviewer takes lot of CPU capacity). But when following a link to a second video, the video area is rendered grey and only audio is working. Sometimes I get a message saying that nspluginviewer crashed (after leaving a site).

Has the fix been released into the main repos yet? I'm totally lost as to what I gotta do to make flash work seamlessly. Please do let me know if I need to provide additional information. Thanks!

I am using Kubuntu 8.04 LTS Amd64. Flash works on YouTube but does not work
properly on MySpace music pages. The music player on MySpace displays the
title of the song as undefined and it does not play.

@ Rashad:

My Kubuntu 8.04 LTS is the 32 bit version. I just discovered something quite interesting about youtube videos. When I view them through http://video.google.com , flash plays perfectly - there is both picture and sound. The same videos on youtube.com however, come up as grey boxes with sound but no picture.

Maybe something to do with the way youtube (and dailymotion, etc.) embed flash videos on their sites?

Also I happened to stumble upon this from KDE docs:-

http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-runtime/faq/webbrowser.html#id2558174 ?
9.13.
Why does Konqueror display a plain grey square when I try to view flash animations, even though the flash plugin is installed?
Under the latest versions of X.org, having the composite extension loaded can cause problems with the flash plugin. Try disabling the composite extension and see if normal flash operation is restored.
Does it have anything to do with the erratic grey boxes phenomenon that so many of us are facing?

The following are screenshots depicting the grey box phenomenon on my comp:-

Youtube via Google Videos
http://picasaweb.google.com/firasmr786/UntitledAlbum02/photo#5195640883281646130

Youtube via youtube.com
http://picasaweb.google.com/firasmr786/UntitledAlbum02/photo#5195640891871580738

On extremely rare occasions, youtube videos on youtube.com do manage do show up as expected. This video http://youtube.com/watch?v=EyDB4b_vRE8&feature=related for example *always* works perfectly as depicted in the screenshot below:

I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 fully updated as of 2008-05-26 and confirm this problem still exists. I do not have the Composite extension enabled in my xorg.conf. I have yet to see a single YouTube video work correctly, including the one erythrocyte reported always worked. I can confirm that YouTube hosted videos are visible via Google video search, so the problem depends on how the video is embedded in the web page; some ways of embedding a given video work and other ways of embedding the same source fail. I wonder if the failure is a race condition or otherwise related to CPU speed. My machine is quite slow (1.6Ghz VIA) and always fails. Others have reported occasional successes and it is a good chance they are using faster hardware.
