I can confirm this. No external media is accessible at all with Dolphin unless you start Dolphin with kdesudo.

I can confirm that if I run: sudo dolphin
then I can mount the media.

Actually a kde4libs patch issue. The KDE 4.1.2 upload should fix this. (And in time for beta freeze too.)

Actually it's only half fixed at the moment. External media such as usb disks now mount fine, but not internal hard drive partitions, for example.

I also have this problem, I can't mound external or internal media.

If I run sudo dolphin, I can mount internal but not external media.

I forgot to add that when I try to mount an usb disk, this is the dmesg result:

[ 845.839223] UDF-fs: No VRS found
[ 845.880597] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

4.1.2 kde did not fix it
12 oct and still not fixed
very annoying bug, very disapointing
is there any roadmap or schedule about fixing this?
is there any other way to mount partitions?

I am running the Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex Beta with KDE 4.1.2 and I have noticed this problem as well.

I have three partitions on my hard disk; ext3 (Linux), FAT32 (shared) and NTFS (Windows.) I cannot access the FAT32 or NTFS partitions even though they have icons in the sidebar of Dolphin. Neither of the partitions appear under /media/.

If I run 'sudo dolphin' in Konsole, then I'm able to access the partitions after entering a password prompt. I am still able to access the partitions even if I close down Dolphin, run 'sudo -k' then reopen it. However, once I restart the session and I am unable to access them.

Interestingly enough, I am unable to access the memory card on my camera under any circumstances. The camera appears under Dolphin, however on clicking on the icon, I am presented with the following message at the bottom of the window:

"An error occurred while accessing 'Volume (vfat)', the system responded: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
in some cases useful info is found in syslog-
try
dmesg | tail or so"

Running the command in the Konsole gives the following message:

dmesg | tail
[ 497.829070] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
[ 503.956036] FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
[ 513.165814] UDF-fs: No VRS found
[ 513.350693] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
[ 553.066840] UDF-fs: No VRS found
[ 553.254451] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
[ 586.909581] UDF-fs: No VRS found
[ 587.093323] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.
[ 701.433464] UDF-fs: No VRS found
[ 701.617837] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

That means nothing to me. Trying "dmesg | so" gives a 'command not found' error message.

I don't know if this is significant, but up until Hardy Heron, those different partitions were identified with an /sda/ sequence and the same was true during the installation process, but now they are now identified by 'disk,' 'disk-1,' etc.

Not a kdebase issue. The issue is lower-level inside kdelibs.

when should we expect this issue to be resolved
it is critical

Further to my last post, I've found that under Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta 1 KDE 4.1.2, if you attempt to run:
'kdesudo dolphin' in Konsole, Dolphin opens up with the following error message at the bottom of the window:

Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files.

I am then unable to access my Home folder or any other partition via that instance of Dolphin. However, whilst leaving that instance running and then selecting File Manager from the Kmenu, I am able to see the Home folder plus all of the other partitions that I have (FAT32 and NTFS) in the new instance of Dolphin.

Although inadvisable, should I run 'sudo dolphin' in Konsole, I am able to access all partitions first time. Accessing a memory card in a camera however is still not possible for me.

I am now able to mount external media because I removed something that was on /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdb1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

That's why the dmesg log said it couldn't find cd rom format!
But this seems to be related to another package.

I still can't mount internal media.

I thought I had my Ibex up to date. Even loaded mountmanager and told it to mount my NTFS partition, even force it if need be. Only thru Dolphin/Nautilus can I mount the drive. This is as of 10-19-08. What can I do to get this to automount as all my files are located there? It is my "My Documents" folder under XP
