Bug Description

Binary package hint: hwdata

I've just synced the hwdata MonitorDB file in Fedora for Fedora 8 against Dell's published list of monitors on support.dell.com. The Fedora hwdata package is used as the basis of the Ubuntu hwdata package, which is great. I've updated my sync script to report Dell monitors that are missing from both Fedora and Ubuntu packaging now. Here's the list of missing packages from Ubuntu gutsy and hardy 0.200. These will all be included in Fedora 8 hwdata-0.207-2 starting tomorrow.

Impact: This will ensure users of Screens and Graphics, and Bulletproof-X can find the correct Dell monitor.

Addressed: Attach patch adds the listed monitors to kde-guidance's MonitorsDB, used by S&G and BPX.

Reproduction: Using one of the monitors listed above, attempt to configure it using S&G or BPX. The monitor will not be listed.

Regression Potential: Near zero. This merely adds some new entries to MonitorsDB, which is only used if the user configures using either BulletproofX or Screens and Graphics (in many cases, Ubuntu's defaults and xorg autodetection will "just work").

does this mean displayconfig-gtk will recognize my internal laptop monitor and resolution once this is released (1420n with 1440x900 display)

Thom, look at the output of ddcprobe, and if you see your laptop monitor ID matched by one of the items updated in this bug, then yes.

We currently ship this data both in hwdata (which is apparently not a dependency for anything, but should be updated anyway), and kde-guidance (which displayconfig-gtk uses). I'll upload and SRU a package for the latter hopefully soon (presently swamped with UDS/All-Hands stuff).

hmm, ddcprobe doesn't say much of anything, this is the 1440x900 monitor sold with the Dell Inspiron 1420n with Ubuntu preinstalled.

AFAIK we don't use hwdata, but we do ship a copy of MonitorsDB in kde-guidance and I've integrated them into that. We'll get the updated hwdata in syncs from debian, but it would be worth including this update for Gutsy's kde-guidance.

This has been uploaded to gutsy-proposed, and is also available here:

There are 27 additional Dell monitors which are in the new upstream hwdata git repo at
http://git.fedoraproject.org/hosted/hwdata.git/?p=hwdata.git;a=blob_plain;f=MonitorsDB;hb=HEAD

which didn't make it into the 20080103-0ubuntu1 checkin and build.

How can the build of the kde-guidance package be scripted to ensure it pulls from that upstream package to ensure it has the latest version possible every time?

These 27 additional Dell monitors are in the upstream git repo.
