like already posted in Club Vaio (http://club.vaio.sony.eu/clubvaio/gb/en/forum/viewthread?thread=59034)
-> what's the output of:

acpi_listen

+ <keypress>??

If there is one, please post it and we simply deal with a ACPI - Event which isn't linked to ATI brightness.
--> There should be enough openbugs for a non working / or a solution for brightness on a ATI / AMD card (I just dealed with 2 nvidia one :-))

If not we're dealing with a problem that the sony laptop mudule doesn't recognize your keys (that's what idon't expect.)
