I'll work on it. Seems like modifying gwenview.png to gwenrename.png is the most logical solution. Source pkg=gwenrename.

This should fix the file conflict. Installing gwenview and gwenrename at the same time should yield no errors.

I believe this is a bug in the upstream "makefiles", since there are two targets which are installing icons:

install-data-local
install-kde-icons

While the first installs the correct icons, the second doesn't; you can see in the binary package that both icons are installed.
So, while your patch may work, I believe a more complete solution would be to override the call to the incorrect target.
Patching out install-kde-icons as a prerequisite for install-data-am most probably will do that, but I think there should be a better way to instruct make about it.
Failing that personally I think it makes more sense to modify debian/rules removing from there the incorrect icons more than patching the Makefile.in file.

Cesare Tirabassi: Thanks for the pointers. I agree this is a better way of doing it.

Here's a new patch that bypasses install-kde-icons and uninstall-kde-icons. It may not be perfect, but I still believe it is better than the old idea which was actually causing duplicate files of the same name.

Many thanks, seems good but I would like to have Tonio's opinion too.

In the changelog, it would be better to add the name of the patch, and an explanation of what it does, something like:

* Add patch 02_fix_icon_conflict.patch (LP: #140012) :
  - Fix wrongly installed icon files

Note that the debdiff needs a patch -p4 since i believe it was prepared in a chroot. In the future it would be better if you can provide a standard debdiff.

Its too late for gutsy, but we can still include this fix for hardy if needed.
Can you check and eventually propose a patch?

I'm not seeing how it is late for Gutsy since the source pkg is in universe? (i.e., for a bugfix patch)

http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/source/gwenrename

Additionally, for Hardy, wouldn't this have to be delayed because there is no alpha release of it yet? If not, I wouldn't know how to go about it. Replace "gutsy" with "hardy" in diff?

Here is the Gutsy patch with the changes implemented (changelog/patch path). This time it applies with -p1 from within /gwenrename dir (not sure what difference it makes in any case). I have created the patches using "debuild -us -uc" and "debdiff ver1 ver2 > diff_file" on a normal Gutsy install without chroot but I don't have all the other fancy Debian package managing stuff installed so maybe that is why it isn't coming out as expected. That is the way I have always done patches though.

I would appreciate it if a maintainer could take a look at this patch.

Well, for gutsy we would have to go for an sru:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

for which I have mixed feeling if this bug would justify it.

For hardy the only change would be the distribution, and the version to which it would apply which is the one currently in hardy.
Since this is the same as your patch used I could just change the distribution myself and upload it.
However, there is a new upstream version out (1.1-beta3):

http://members.hellug.gr/sng/gwenrename/

and I expect that this will officially become an rc and 1.1 soon. So, can you perhaps check if this has been corrected upstream?
If not if would be worth reporting it so that we would just update our version without any need to patch it for hardy.

Nah I don't think it's worth an SRU just for this. It's too minor.

I looked at the upstream tarball for gwenrename and gwenview (latests), and neither of them have conflicting icons. I believe they were just packaged incorrectly for Gutsy. Since Hardy will be syncing with a new version I'm not sure that I can do anything right now. (Other than to somehow ensure that the Hardy one gets packaged properly.) Is there any remaining reason for it to be assigned to me at the moment?

If you believe an SRU is in order then my previous patch suffice for Gutsy.

You are assigned because you were taking care of this bug; as you said, to make sure that this is solved by the hardy package once we sync, or, if we don't sync, to fix it for hardy.
I'm assigning this to myself so that this is not forgotten, if you want to keep working on this the please reassign it to yourself.
Thanks.

Backported the change to Makefile.in from Beta2. The icons are now named correctly. This is the correct way to fix the problem, not by commenting out Build-Targets.

The package builds and installs fine now.

gwenrename (1.1~beta1-0ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * debian/patches
    - add 02_fix_icon_installation.patch to correctly install the icons.
This is a backport from the beta2-change. (LP: #140012)
