grub using wrong menu.lst after gutsy upgrade?

Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

After upgrade from Feisty>Gutsy (64bit), I was surprised to not see the new Gutsty kernel in the o/s list on boot.

The new kernel appears in the /boot/grub/menu.lst in the Gutsy filesystem partition but, (I'm guessing), grub appears to be using the one from within my ubuntustudio install (- in adjacent partition)

This is on a laptop with only one hard disc (sata)

I'm sorry if this is a side effect of some of the other reported bugs currently being addressed, but as it's not exactly the same as any of them I thought I would mention it.

Thanks.

Do you have a separate /boot partition?

Also, check your /etc/kernel-img.conf file and see whether it has these 2 lines:

postinst_hook = update-grub
postrm_hook = update-grub

No, but the disc has 5 partitions. xp in the primary and in the extended - data, feisty>gutsy upgraded, swap, ubuntustudio.

Both the ubuntus share the same swap space.

Yes, those lines do appear in the (feisty>gutsy upgraded) /etc/kernel-img.conf

I have been able to boot the correct kernel by pasting the entries from one menu.lst into the other.

Seems to be the same problem.

It wouldn't have anything to do with the root password now being required to mount a foreign ext3 filesystem?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Looking back, I guess that the ubuntustudio menu.lst became the active one after install. So, when feisty was upgraded to gutsy, the inactive menu.lst was the one that was amended.

Hi Nathan,

as this thread seems to be connected to the one where I reported my bug, here's my answer:

the re-numbering happened with every major upgrade and I have to manually edit the menu.lst after every major upgrade.

Greetings,

Thomas

this is not a bug: with multiple linux installations on a system, grub will use only one of the menu.lst files, so kernel updates on another linux partition will not appear on that menu...
